With fingers crossed I ordered this one and was overjoyed with every aspect of the Makala Shark. It did not smell like it had just been painted. The construction is pristine. It came with Aquila strings. The back of the ukelele has a slight rounded curve and the tone is deeper and warmer than my Mitchell concert ukelele, which makes me want to try Aquila strings on my instrument which already sounds great.
It came with a digital tuner, which alone is worth about $20, a soft and light case and another stronger case - suitable for travel, a polishing cloth and an instructional DVD, which is helpful for a beginner without being overwhelming.
I am completely satisfied with this purchase. I own a few quality guitars, including a Gibson and a Martin and have tried many ukeleles in music stores so I have a feel for quality in stringed instruments and I fee thatl this ukelele is a very good instrument.
The finish is quite nice. The paint is smooth and even, the neck is straight, no sharp corners on the ends of the frets, and it came strung with Aquila strings. I was pleased to see it come with both an inner dust bag, as well as a padded gig bag. The clamp-on digital tuner, microfiber cloth and instructional DVD are nice additions.
I checked the string height and quickly lowered the action to where I like it. After tightening and stretching the strings a bit, I tuned it up and started strumming. What a gorgeous sound! Much better than I expected, especially given the price. Very full, well-rounded tone with decent volume. Louder than I expected, to be honest. Keep in mind that this is a sub $50 instrument if you remove all the extras.
With a little minor set-up, this is a no-brainer that I can highly recommend.
We will start with cons and work up to pros
-Plastic (only a con because I thought it was wood not a big deal)
-Plastic washers on the tuning machines were not glued down. Caused some "fret buzz" sound...Super glue and fixed.
-For the money it's a great uke
- sounds great
-comes with decent strings
-after above con holds tune fairly well
- nice hard case(ponied up a couple extra bucks)
All in all for the price range it is the absolute bottom end of Kala, but still a pretty good uke.
Had I not had to fiddle with it at all would've been a no brainier 5 star review.
Got this as a birthday present about a week ago. It's been on my wishlist for quite a while! This is my first ukulele, and I am in love.
This set does come with everything pictured. The soft case is nice, with little pockets to hold extra picks. (I also received the soft ukulele picks, which I highly recommend!) The tuner works very well, and if you play guitar, has settings for that, as well! The soft cloth is nice for wiping down the instrument. Haven't messed with the CD, so no input there.
On to the instrument itself! It really is a gorgeous color, and has a good sound to it. I had concerns at first about the strings/pegs, because I was constantly having to re-tune. Looked it up and that is normal for new strings on a ukulele. It's been about a week now and they keep their tune very well. Just keep that tuner clipped on for the first week or so and make sure to constantly tuning, especially if things start to sound a little wonky to you.
Love this so much, I'll be purchasing this for my best friend's birthday!
