The writing itself took me through a whole host of emotions. Sadness for what we humans have done to wildlife, love for the animals themselves, fury at the ignorant wildlife officials who often gave you nothing but trouble, laughing at some of the humorous incidents you had, joy at your success in releasing many of these animals when they were healthy enough to go wild again. Most of all, I wish I had been there with you and Bev to share the workload and experiences you had with wildlife.
Bev and Chris share with us their love for wildlife, the caring they showed for each and every animal they cared for, and their joy at being able to set them free after their time in "rehab" was over. Some of their "babies" even came back to visit after they went wild. It also showed the difficulty and lack of cooperation they had with local wildlife authorities in carrying out their work. The book is a "must" read! Thank you Bev and Chris for everything you do for those who can't help themselves. The world needs more people like you two!!
It is the sort of book that you want to curl up with, and not emerge from until you have - with sadness and reflection - reached the final page. It is a truly compelling book, where two people - Bev Pervan and Chris Mercer - tell the story of their personal struggle to save South Africa's wildlife from the havoc and suffering wreaked by human beings and the harsh environment. Somehow, they have managed to write a book that is light, humorous and uplifting whilst at the same time exposing the cruel underbelly of a `conservation' ethic which has more to do with human enrichment and exploitation than saving and protecting the amazing wild animals with whom we are privileged to share this beautiful country.
The stories of the individual animals which came into Bev and Chris' care are truly endearing, and provide a unique insight into the amazing personalities and natures of various species of wildlife. There are too many to recount here: Bonnie and Clyde the bat eared foxes (he bold and intrepid, she a `wimp'!); Prickles the porcupine (the bon viveur, who recognises a good `diner' and shares with friends!); Houdini the vulture escapologist; Snooky the poetry-loving Jackal; feisty `Button', the black footed cat; Tripod, the three legged caracal; Tina, the playful springbok; and the brave and bold meerkats, both wild (`the Taliban') and rescued (`the Northern Alliance')! These stories also provide a real insight into the commitment and dedication of the wonderful couple who cared for them.
Bev and Chris were brave enough to put their fates in the hands of the Universe, literally on the throw of a dice, and in doing so they began a lifetime journey as co-creators and advocates for a better future for wildlife. Just look at the `compassion footprint' of their lives: -
*Giving up farming and becoming vegetarian when they saw the scenes at the slaughterhouse
*Putting their life savings into a project to save, rehabilitate and release injured and suffering wild animals
*Investing even more to fight for the survival of their project ... against - irony upon irony - `Nature Conservation'
*Dedicating their working lives (still pro bono!) to advocacy and education to achieve due justice and respect for wildlife
Their lives have doubtless made the world a better place (or prevented it from becoming an even worse place?), and what more could any of us hope for?
I thoroughly recommend their book: It is a great read, which everybody will enjoy. Animal lovers will be entranced, and it is an absolute `must' for anybody working in animal welfare or conservation.
