I bought this based on favorable reviews and I think I am going to get rid of it. I didn't reach the conclusion I *hated* it until recently and it is too late to return. I should have known right when I saw the blade, which is half the size of the braun. It can hardly handle anything. I guess you could maybe blend soft ice cream with this. Or puree some VERY cooked veggies. A very small quantity of very cooked veggies.
The thing that caused me to HATE it is the fact that water collects up inside the tube where mixing piece attaches to the motor. So dirty water collects in there in the dishwasher or wherever and it is very difficult to get it all out. A couple of times, the dirty water has dribbled out into my recipe while I was mixing and that is just NOT ok.
Searching for a new Braun, but I just don't find the one I had.
Pros: powerful; comes with a measuring cup, cleans up easily, two speeds,
Cons: it does get this electrical burning smell after using it for 2 - 3 minutes. I don't know if this is normal or it is burning up. There is no smoke so I am ignoring it but watching for any escalation. And, see my update below for the fatal design flaw that should have this withdrawn from the marketplace immediately.
This is the model rated by Cooks Illustrated and not the other one rated so poorly on Amazon that everyone is complaining about. I took a chance that all those other people bought the wrong model and then griped about Cooks Illustrated when they should have been reading the model numbers more closely.
Update 8/1/2012 - the other reviews about food, water, etc building up inside the detachable blade assembly are correct. I am trying to get the salad dressing out of mine and no matter how much I wash it brown drops of foulness come out of the assembly. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT!!!! There is no way to get the blade assembly apart to clean it.
Update: Decided to try it one last time for 1 cup of whipping cream. Used a bowl instead of provided cup. Made noise at start-up; continued for 5 seconds and wand detached into cream; I re-attached. In 5 more seconds, cream was full of black plastic pieces. Examined and the entire insertion point was broken up. Terrible product! After no more than 6 light uses (eggs and whipped cream), product was unusable.
