I used a label maker to create labels for the spices and that was very easy to do. Overall I would purchase agan
#1 SPACE - these magnetic tins stick easily to the side of a refrigerator or other metal surface. Using these cleared up an entire drawer for me, along with 2 coffee cans I was using to store spices in Ziploc baggies.
#2 ORGANIZATION - I now know at a glance which spices I have on hand and how much. The tops are easily see-through plastic so you know immediately how much is in the tin. I don't have to paw through a million baggies/jars and just hope to stumble over the right spice.
#3 EASE OF USE - Simply twist the top to line up either shaker holes or a larger "pour" hole. Nice and neat.
These hold 3 ounces of dry seasoning, which I thought would be enormous when I bought them, but turned out to be just the right size. You will want to order some labels unless you can tell at a glance which spice is which. I used the "Spice Labels: Clear 1" Round Stickers with Silver Type. Sheet Includes 95 of the Most Common Spice Names / 5 Blank Labels" which are also available from Amazon, and they worked great.
The only negative I have found is that I found the exact same jars on the Pfaltzgraff site for a 'fraction' of the cost here and that upset me a bit. So, I ordered nine more from Pfaltzgraff and another magnetic strip from Amazon and figure that brings the total cost per each down to a reasonable level :0) Gotta look at the glass as half full sometimes.
These jars are working out great and are so handy to have them mounted at eye level on the kitchen wall. I buy large quantities of spices and keep the extra in a pantry.
The magnetic mounting strip was the 'icing on the cake' and looks very neat on the wall. I will mount the second row of jars under the first row very soon.
Today, almost all 18 of the tins I purchased have bound up. The problem is that spices get trapped between the lid and container after opening/closing them, which is practically after every use. With each twist, the spices are pushed further into the gap. Add in a dash of humidity and as Emeril would say, BAM! The spice tin is now stuck; queue the recovery methods, resulting in either bending your spice tin or sacrificing the spice by submerging the whole thing in water. Either way, the end result is no good making the purchase of these spice tins an absolute waste of money.
I think I'll go back to hot-gluing magnets to the bottoms of spice containers.
My biggest issue is with the lids. Any smaller spices can easily fall out through the silts between the lid and the jar. Far too easy to accidentally pull off the lid instead of the whole jar from the fridge, sending half it's contents to the floor. Also, the clear part is a plastic piece that pops out pretty easily. And finally, the magnet isn't that strong. It's okay, but not difficult to accidentally knock off a fridge.
- Convenient way to organize, store, and display larger spices (this would not be good for salt or substances similar in size)
- Stainless steel looks nice
- Lid doesn't form an airtight seal (not good for keeping even the larger spices fresh)
- Plastic see-through piece pops out pretty easily
- Magnet is not very strong
