This is a brilliantly told biography of Pete Burk and his life as a warrior faced with the true terror of battle. He was a 16 year old high school student in 1942. He could enlist at 17 if his parents signed the "Military Consent Form." Pete decided to change his Birth Certificate to make him magically become 17.
Pete ended up on the Jeep carrier "Ommaney Bay." His Kamikaze Nightmare began on 12/15/1944 with the destruction of ships by Kamikazes. January 4, 1945 brings to life Burt's personal terror and the face of death brought upon his ship. The US Navy and the sailors and officers who served on these ships watched ships in their task force being incinerated by the horror of the "Divine Wind" pilots of Japan crash their bomb laden aircraft into capitol ships first, and if no capitol target presented itself, then any target of opportunity.
Two Japanese pilots take off on their planned evasive flight toward the US fleet. One of the pilots selects the Ommaney as his target. Pete providentially escapes being blown to mush. However, he is pierced by ten's or hundred's of shrapnel fragments. "Abandon Ship!" The Ommaney is consumed in explosions and fire. Badly wounded men jump overboard. Some sailors can't swim. Pete's actions save the lives of many. However, now the personal reality of war's personal price multiplies. Endless years of surgeries, the devastation of PTSD and the recovery, mentally, physically and through physical and psychological rehabilitation, now become Pete's life.
Family becomes vital to Pete and his travel through recovery. Love of his wife and children provide a caring medication for wounds of mind and flesh.
This biography puts you with Pete. You see through his eyes. You feel the terror, concussion, blast incineration of flesh, the pain of shrapnel and the shock that confuses, motivates and finally drains strength. Life lived in pain and terror from the Kamikaze Nightmare becomes your nightmare.
Pete is a hero. He willingly put his life forward for country and most importantly, the men he served with. The brotherhood of the fighter cements love for men who are willing to give their life for yours.
War truly is hell. There is no glorious campaign that is not fouled with the destruction of fighters. Kamikaze Nightmare shows war for the honor of those serving, and the ugliness of its cost. "Kamikaze Nightmare" demonstrates what the impact war has on the psyche and body of those who serve. If you think war is Hollywood, read this book to experience its horror. If you know war's cost, read this book to honor a fellow warrior.
God Bless Pete Burt!

This book is a great read. My uncle was a crewmember of the U.S.S. Ommaney Bay and survived the sinking of the ship on January 4, 1945. The accounts of other survivors rendered by Mr. Burt agree perfectly with things my uncle told me about the ship and its sinking before he passed away back in 2001. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is boyhood accounts of mischief and swimming in Texas rivers really aren't necessary in order to serve the purpose of the book. This book could have started with his brother joining the service and continued on from that point and not lost any of its impact and message. Overall though, this is an excellent account of WWII naval history from the points of view of the sailors who lived through it firsthand. This isn't one of those "big picture" books outlining a theater perspective of the war, although when necessary to put the story in perspective, that sort of background information is provided. It's a different sort of history from that of most books on WWII, but one not to be missed.

I have often heard people mistakenly say, that we have never faced the kind of fanatical adversaries that we now do. Oh yes we have, and this book brings that point home painfully. The impact of WWII terrorism, and that's what suicide attacks were, on soldiers and families is dramatically demonstrated by the author. All who misunderstand the sheer horror of the kamikaze attacks need to read this book. All who fail to appreciate the phenomenal courage and accomplishment of the generation of soldiers and families who survived WWII terrorism, need to read this book.

This was a quick read and focused on personal experiences of some crew members during WWII in Pacific campaigns. It follows one of them from youth to enlistment at age 16 and assignment to an aircraft carrier. The effects on the crew of being in a constant state of readiness and enduring the attacks by suicide kamikaze pilots including the lasting impact on them in later life after the war. I liked the way it followed mainly one individual but still explored some of the broader picture.

A brothers experience and history of the Japanese attack on his ship in world war 2

An interesting book about a brother who writes his brothers history of the Kamikaze attack on his ship sinking it in the Pacific during world war 2

This is a short book covering only a few days experience of several sailors aboard ill fated ships. Well researched by the author who strove to understand what happened to his brother and get recognition for his reported heroic actions. This is a harrowing tale of sudden violence, incomprehensible luck and ultimately, survival. That people survive and ultimately heal from such experiences is a tribute to human capacity for renewal.

A real look into the daily lives and feelings of our Naval heroes of the Pacific. Makes me appreciate the suffering and sacrifice of our Navy and Marines in the Pacific in World War I I. I served with VF 194 off Yankee Station on the CVA 14 USS Ticondaroga and CVA 34 USS Oriskany and not been called to make the sacrifice that the WWII Sailors and Marines were expected to endure. Thank you for your service.

As a daughter of a WWII veteran, this book helped me know my dad better--even after he has just gone to Heaven. It is a gift.

A very brave man

The story of a young US sailor who served on the USS Ommaney Bay an aircraft carrier in WW2. It was hit and sunk by a kamikaze attack. The young man - Pete Burt helped rescue some of his fellow survivor's and kept them positive until they were picked up. He later served on the light cruiser USS Columbia which was twice hit by kamikaze attacks. The ship survived but Pete was badly injured, but he also survived. His story, told by his younger brother is one of great bravery and suffering. Five stars all the way.

I have read a number of accounts of the (battle) actions described in this book - but none so resonating. While the book concentrates on the experiences of the author's older brother, it includes those of a number of other individuals. Nearly all are told in the first person - errors in spelling and all - and are extraordinarily engaging.

An outstandingly researched book about one man's experience of Kamikaze attacks. One of the best first hand accounts of the second world war that I have ever read.
