I bought this game because I actually beat the Dog Days first which I absolutely loved regardless of all the horrible reviews it received. This game was no different in the way it was ripped to shreds by critics and customers alike. Since I wanted to know more about these characters, I went ahead and purchased this incredibly underrated game. I'll point out differences between the 2 games and complaints that marred it's reputation.
Graphics- It has a very "clean" feeling about the game. It's almost a complete opposite from what Dog Days offers. It has minimal detail BUT the textures are amazing. Just look at the duffle bag Kane carries around. Also the lighting effects are life-like and incredibly accurate (club scene stage). It doesn't however create bench mark for graphical prowess of the Ps3. It serves it's purpose and that's it. 4/5
Controls- It doesn't have your standard Circle-crouch/Square- Reload/ Triangle- Change weapon scheme from other games so it will take you a good 20 minutes to understand how to control Kane and his "buddies". After you get a hang of it, I recommend to tweak the movement speeds to your liking because the defaults are kinda slow. Then you'll be shooting like a pro. 4/5
Sounds- Voice acting is great... if not better than Dog Days. The F-bombs everybody complains about didn't surprise me at all. I honestly thought it was going to be thrown around like candy but nope. Prototype 2 has waaay more f-bombs than this and that game managed to make it funny. Here it feels like Scarface mixed with Hoodlum. You're playing with criminals... what did you expect? lol
Gunshots sound powerful, music is appropriate and ambient noise sounds great. 4.5/5
Gameplay- The game is fast-paced so you really need to be on your toes when moving/shooting around. This makes the firefights frantic, disorientating and at times challenging. You will die if try to Rambo your way into a shootout. Controlling your allies is not that hard either. I've read about them getting in the way... not really. You have to tell them where to go and it's as simple as pressing a button. Also, they do revive you when you're down. The only times you really die, it's because they killed them too. Weapon accuracy is actually better than in Dog Days but only because it's not as hectic. Your enemies will miss as much as you do so that's why I recommend you tweak the aiming speeds to what's comfortable to you and that way you'll have an upper hand. 4.5/5
Fun-Factor- This game is extremely FUN! It's different and that's what the gaming industry needs. The characters are so unlikable that you actually like them and the story is pretty damn cool too. 5/5
Anyways, if you are looking for a neat little game with excellent co-op and great action... get this game. It's f#$%&@! awesome.
