The reason for the 5 stars is because IT WORKS FLAWLESSLY on the equipment it was designed for, namely two Macs and the earlier edition Mac 27 inch LED Cinema Display. By trying to use it with OEM displays or other makes of computers, it may be more difficult but I can't address that because I do indeed have two Macs and the earlier mini DisplayPort (mDP) Mac 27" Display. Don't even try to use this switch with a later Mac Thunderbolt Display. It absolutely won't work.

I toyed with the idea of going with 4 stars because there are absolutely no instructions, manuals or hook-up guides with this machine, either in the box or on the web site of the manufacturer. That being said, it is relatively easy to figure out how to install it provided you're working with the right equipment. I have a new Mac Mini, a much older Mac Pro and the mDP version of the Mac LED Display.

Let me outline hook-up instructions since you won't get them from Kanex. Open the box, remove the unit and straighten the rather stiff cables. Clip the switch to the bottom of the Display base in the front with it's built-in clip. You'll have to pry the clip open a little with a screw driver because it's very stiff. Once attached, it takes on a "solid" feeling contrary to a lot of the other reviews. Run the two stiff wires, which encase both a USB cable and a mDP cable, up through the big hole in the back of the Display stand and down in back of the desk. In my case one went to the Mac Pro under the desk and hooked into a mDP to DVI adapter which connects to the Pro's DVI port. The other cable swings back up and attaches to the Mac Mini placed on the top of the desk. It connects through the Thunderbolt port which is compatible with mDP. You don't need an adapter.

I can't imagine giving this product anything over two stars, except perhaps because it's the only KVM of this sort I can find.

List of issues with this product:

* Like many others noted, it feels very cheap
* Three months after I bought it, the USB ports stopped working - so now I switch the keyboard cable by hand
* Screen blacks out intermittently, for a second or so. This isn't often enough to be catastrophic, but is often enough to be annoying. Oddly enough, sometimes the volume buttons on the keyboard trigger this (even though the keyboard doesn't go through the switch)
* When the screen blacks out or when I switch to the other computer, the sound balance of the cinema display goes off-kilter. As a result, I have the Sound Preferences panel always open

But I guess the worst part is that I'll probably end up buying it again, since there don't seem to be any alternatives.

UPDATE
Since I wrote this review, I ordered another one. Good news: the USB connection worked on the second unit. Bad news: video didn't. I sent it back.
After fiddling with the old unit, I was able to squeeze out another month of usage by shimming in aluminum foil between the USB plug and the outlet. After about a month, that stopped working as well.

Final word: this device is complete unadulterated crap.

It looked like a good buy for the price. Some commenters mentioned the switch feels cheap, it does. Overall it's decent quality and I'd be happy with it if only it could do it's sole function. Ignoring the fact my 15" 2011 mbp continuously freezes when an external is connected regarding sleeping(goggle it, seems to be common.. my 2012 mbp does not), this unit requires the mac to have the lid open.
I bought this to hook a work and personal macbook pro up at home and toggle the workstations. I do not use the macbooks keyboard and close the lid entirely and use the external. This Kanex SnapX does not function AT ALL with the lid closed.

Had to return it.

The Kanex SnapX does exactly what is supposed to do it. It allows for effortless sharing between two mini-display port equipped computers and an Apple Cinema Display.

I have my 27" Apple Cinema Display connected to my Mac Mini and a PC (with Radeon 6x series card with display port). It switches between the two with the press of a button. The display is gorgeous and I've noticed no degradation at all. The pass through cable works flawlessly as well.

I have two complaints and one suggestion about the unit:

a) It is aesthetically pleasing, but the feel of it is kind of cheap. The button on top to switch inputs feels very cheap. I would love to have seen this unit in a mac style aluminum case.
b If you're working on computer A and you turn on computer B, the device automatically switches you to computer B. A minor annoyance.
c It would probably increase the footprint, but I would love to have some kind of input switching via keyboard (like is done on many of the higher end KVM switches).

Overall, I rate this very high and works flawlessly.. just a few minor complaints.

Tried this on a Cinema Display using MiniDP but the screen flickered often, sometimes going black. I exchanged the first one but the replacement did the same thing. Also, it feels that with multiple uses or over time it will physically break.

After not finding anything that I would be confident in, I set up Apple Screen Sharing. It works great! I would recommend it as a possible alternative.
