Blog post—From Cathy
Writers,
What’s the longest you’ve waited to see a piece of your work in print?
TWO YEARS ago Karen and I were notified that we would have stories in same issue of Gargoyle, an international literary magazine published by Paycock Press. Of course, this was during the height of the pandemic and, understandably, all did not go as planned.
Anyway, the wait is over and we’re so excited to both have a story in this terrific anthology! Gargoyle Magazine #2 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postU.K. author LB Griffin is celebrating the release of her brand-new novel, The Twenty-One-Year Contract. A sequel to her debut, Secrets, Shame and a Shoebox, it’s getting great reviews and is filled, like all of LB’s work, with “women don’t see themselves as courageous, strong, or survivors, but they certainly are.”
Only a simple shoebox, but full of secrets…

Blog postWrangling the Beast: Playing with Structure in the First Novel
Moderator: Joy Baglio; Panelists: Emma Komlos Hrobsky, Raluca Albu, Swati Khurana
Writers are often trying to subdue this beast of structuring something so large as a novel. The five panelists at this virtual panel at this year’s AWP conference gave their best advice on structure, and provided suggested reading and other tools to help you through.

Blog post—From Cathy
Hello all!
Here’s another post from the sessions Karen and I attended at the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) last month in Philadelphia. Sorry for the delay, but as you can see, this post is massive and took a while to assemble. It combines two sessions we attended on short story collections—writing them, organizing them, submitting them.
Enjoy!

Blog postCathy and I are back from the Association of Writers & Writing Program’s 2022 AWP Conference & Bookfair, held this year on March 23-26 in Philadelphia. We had a blast. Talked into the wee hours of the night, caught up on every aspect of our lives, imbibed an impressive amount of wine—as well as a few martinis.
We also attended some amazing panel discussions in a conference that convened more than 7,000 publishing professionals. We’ll be sharing some of what we learned in4 months ago Read more -
Blog post–From Cathy
It has been a looong time since Karen and I have seen each other, and we couldn’t be more excited to be meeting up tomorrow in Philadelphia to attend the Association of Writers & Writing Program’s (AWP) Conference! This conference promises a host of panels, readings, and events, and a HUGE bookfair exhibition where so many of our favorite writers, journals, and presses will be present. Best of all, it allows us four glorious days of immersing ourselves in writing and w5 months ago Read more -
Blog postHey Friends,
I was thrilled to have my novel, Arborview, included in this BookTrib recommended list of novels set in small towns.
Small towns are a genre unto themselves in literature. Please check out some of these titles. Some wonderful writers here, and settings that showcase community, connection, meaning–and sometimes the lack thereof.
Cheers,
Karen

Blog postHi Friends,
Please mark February 10 on you calendars! I’m hoping you can join us for an upcoming reading and discussion of my novel Arborview. It’s a virtual event, so there won’t be any safety concerns.
The hosting library does a terrific job supporting the local literary community, and there is always a great turnout. Here’s all the pertinent info from organizer Kate Farrish:

Blog postHi Friends,
We’re wishing everyone the best this holiday season. What books are on your gift list this year? And which ones are you hoping to receive? Please share. I just finished Andre Dubus III’s outstanding Gone So Long, and I’m gifting it to my husband.
In this season of giving, I’d like to ask anyone who has read Arborview to please leave a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads. These reviews have become so important—too important, but that’s another story—and promoters8 months ago Read more -
Blog postHi All,
This holiday season is off to a great start, from a writing perspective. I’m thrilled to have my short story, Pilgrims, in the new issue of Gargoyle Magazine.
Based in Arlington, Virginia, Gargoyle is run by editor Richard Peabody, a fixture on the Washington, D.C., literary scene. It’s such an honor to have my work featured alongside the talented fiction, poets, and nonfiction writers in this handsome volume. This packed issue is more book than magazin8 months ago Read more

A story of loss, change and transcendence, Homing Instincts follows Seth Hingham, a young wildlife biologist, as he struggles to put his life back together after his news anchor girlfriend walks out on him and his much loved father dies.
Seth longs to retreat to the pristine woodlands of New England’s North Country, where he believes anonymity and solitude will heal his wounds. But a slow job market up North forces him to first make a detour to his Connecticut hometown.
Old ghosts pop up, as Seth’s cousin concocts a plan to honor the memory of a high school classmate killed in a long ago accident for which Seth has always felt responsible. At the same time, changing family dynamics in the wake of his father’s death are toppling the old status quo as Seth struggles to determine who he is and where he belongs. A chance at new love with a spirited, yet fragile, single mother further complicates the picture.
Homing Instincts traces Seth’s painful, redemptive, and sometimes humorous, journey to re-imagine his past and create a new future.
