The Italian company Kartell is famous around the world for having invented the culture of plastic furniture and interior fittings. Kartell was founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, a chemical engineer with a vision to create something good from plastics, a material whose applications were still relatively unexplored. A fruitful collaboration with the great designer Gino Colombini started, who won the firm its first Compasso d’Oro award in 1955. Particularly since the plastic-loving era of the 1960s and ’70s, Kartell has become an enduring household name; from the famous designs of Anna Castelli Ferrieri and Joe Colombo in the 1960s to more recent hits such as Philippe Starck’s Ghost Chairs or Ron Arad’s Bookworm shelves, Kartell has consistently chosen to work with the world’s most talented designers while reinventing plastic as a quality material for the new age.

This survey covers the entire history of the company, decade by decade, exploring all aspects of its evolution as well as the social and technological qualities of Kartell products. Also included is an interview with Claudio Luti, owner and president of Kartell for more than 20 years and architect of the new boom. But most of all the objects themselves―in historical shots, ads, displays, and many photos especially made for this publication, with detailed captions on the technological innovations behind the design―tell the story of a company that brought us the culture of plastics.

About the Author

Elisa Storace is a curator and organizer of cultural events, a specialist in the fields of corporate museology and design. In her role of museologist and researcher she was in charge of reorganizing the Compasso d’Oro ADI Collection. As an independent curator she realized a series of internationally traveling design exhibitions for Promos, a Special Agency of the Milan Chamber of Commerce. In 2008 she became the curator of the Museo Kartell, and in 2011 an adviser for the museum’s foundation.

Hans Werner Holzwarth is a book designer and editor specializing in contemporary art and photography. His TASCHEN publications include the Collector’s Editions Jeff Koons, Christopher Wool, Albert Oehlen, Ai Weiwei, and the David Hockney SUMO A Bigger Book, as well as monographs like the XXL-sized Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Essential read for kartell collectors

First few chapters were great until it gets into the 90s when Phillip Starck’s gaudy lack of subtlety tarnished the brand’s timeless qualities. I suppose that’s less a criticism of the book and more of the direction Kartell ultimately took to prioritize profit over integrity. I think any editor worth their weight would’ve put that stuff into a different volume however.
