This item surpassed my expectation!
I ordered it to hide an area of wall that had been scratched and the paint ripped a bit in my bedroom. My expectation was that it would cover the area, make it look nicer, and that I would be able to easily write inspirational messages and verses on it.
Upon opening the box, I discovered that the material was thicker than I had expected, and very smooth!
Because of its width, my plan was to cut the 8ft roll in half and place two 4ft sections up side by side to create a "chalkboard".
I folded the product in half and pinched off the halfway mark. It was easy to cut a straight line because the backing has gridlines printed on it. The scissors cut easily through it.
I only removed about an inch of backing from the end of my first panel and pressed the exposed portion *lightly* against my wall. A quick measurement from the ceiling to each corner helped me to level it straight. I laid it a little crooked the first time and was able to carefully pull it back off the wall to realign it and then press it firmly onto the wall when it was where I wanted it.
Keeping the first panel attached at the top of the wall, I reached behind the piece to pull down 3" or so of the backing at a time, smoothing each portion firmly onto the wall from the center outward. It went on smoothly and I was able to push any bubbles out or carefully lift a mis-laid area to reflatten.
When adding the second four foot piece next to the first one, I overlapped the two by about half an inch, so that there would be no gap between the two panels if I were to have put the second one on a little crooked. Once written upon, you can hardly see the overlap. It also covered the damaged areas of my walls a lot better than I had hoped!
The chalk is very soft and writes so smoothly on the material. I accidentally broke my first piece in half because I didn't realize how soft and nice it was! My cheap, hard chalk from home doesnt work as nicely on the material as the chalk that came with this product does, so I will need to order some more soft chalk.
The cloth that came with the product dry wipes just like a normal soft chalk eraser would, leaving a bit of white shadow behind. But a quick damp rag wipe down left the material looking as good as new and ready to write on again!
I surrounded my new "chalkboard" with a strand of ivy I had laying around. You could also finish it off with some wood moulding strips, or even leave it as-is on your wall.
All in all, I love my new chalkboard! It was inexpensive and easy to install. It makes a great addition to my bedroom wall, where I can display inspirational verses and messages that my kids and I will enjoy. There was no mess involved, like we would have had with chalkboard paint. It took me about an hour to put it up and decorate it.
I'm looking forward to purchasing a few more rolls once I rearrange my kids' rooms, so that I can create some chalkboards for them!
