UPDATE: I was lucky enough to catch 6 steelhead this week including one wild fish that was about 18lbs. This reel performed flawlessly! Drag was very smooth with plenty of stopping power. The bail flipped over easily and I didn't have any problems with line tangling or getting caught. Retrieve is quick and smooth. I'm impressed!
UPDATE 2: Still going strong! I have caught numerous steelhead on this real. It just seems to get smoother with use and casts beautifully. I'm very happy with it and will buy a couple more for my kids and friends who I bring who don't have their own gear.
This reel features an instant stop one way anti-reverse, which is a huge plus for setting your hook. Some reels will only lock in one spot and that can cause slack in the line as it travels back to that stopping point. Surprisingly, this feature is not advertised on Amazon or on the KastKing website. It was printed as a symbol on the product packaging.
KastKing Orcas have a smooth drag due the triple disc carbon fiber drag washers. There is a lot of room for adjustment to set your preferred weight in the drag. The Power Launch Spool is longer and shallower so the line flows freely off the reel when casting.
The handle allows you to change from left or right side easily. The handle is designed to fold down, which is a plus for storage/travel. The handle is easy to grip even when it gets wet.
This reel is very smooth due to the 12 + 1 shielded stainless steel ball bearings and provides no notable vibrations when reeling in. We only fish in freshwater, but the Orcas is approved for use in saltwater too.
For the past 8 months, I've had the privilege of putting this reel to the test. It is an extremely versatile reel, weighing in at around 10 oz with a max stopping power of 26.5 lbs. Being light weight with extreme stopping power, and not having an overly HUGE profile, I'm able to use this on just about any fish in my region and many others. I can use it to pull a 45lb Flathead catfish from it's cover or... use it on pan fish, such as bass, walleye, and the like.
In my video review, I show a closer look at this reel, its components and give my thoughts. In person, this is a very "slick" looking setup. I really like the red salmon/black color scheme. The added carbon fiber skirt, on the lower portion of the spool really sets it off.
Although I don't plan on using this near saltwater, it is indeed "Salt Water Approved". With it's all lightweight metal components, I don't have to worry about corrosion. Like many nicer reels, this one has a left/right hand interchangeable handle. I also like the rubberized grip on the handle which gives me leverage when my hands are wet due to rain, fish slime, etc.
I received a product sample to test and evaluate and, overall, this reel casts very nicely and has been up to the challenges I can throw at it. I'm looking forward to putting it through it's second season, starting in another month or two. Should I come across any thing else of importance, I'll be updating my review to reflect such.
