Top customer reviews
As other reviewers have had the same inlet port breaking as mine, you have been warned. I'm going to research and buy a better water filtration system. This Hiker Pro has a design flaw that you cannot trust it out in the field. I've attached a photo where I you can see the plastic weld around the inlet port is joined to the main body. This is where the failure and design flaw is located.
I've been following up with Katadyn customer service to get a replacement part. It's been six weeks and there has been no resolution.
This year I replaced my seven year old Katadyn Hiker with a Katadyn Hiker Pro. The cartridge plastic on the new unit is black, like the filter body. The week before my canoe trip to the BWCA I overheard a local outfitter customer complaining about the very short life of a new filter cartridge. I experience the exact same thing. Filtering only water scooped from the middle of clean BWCA lakes, the new filter became almost impossible to pump after only 2 days with 3 people. On inspection, the pre-filters and filter wrap were pristine, and the filter "paper" was only slightly tinged from tannin. I swapped in a 3 year old backup cartridge (with blue plastic), and it worked fine for the remaining 6 days. So what do I do going forward, carry 3 replacements for an 8 day trip?
them being put out of commission with less than perfect water - when this happens, I hope you have
some sort of backup plan. This could also get very expensive.
I am leaning more towards using my admittedly heavier ceramic cartridge filter because it can be cleaned if you clog it,
and also chemical means that work on water that would present clogging problems with filters. I have used iodine and chlorine products in the past and am currently testing magnesium permanginate.
I really enjoy the water flow, it runs through very quickly so you don't have to spend 30 minutes sucking through a straw. I filled up a 32 oz bottle in about a minute.
The build quality is good, I'm glad I went with this instead of a straw type.
