I'm a seasoned backpacker and bought the Hiker Pro. I tested it at home to make sure everything works as it should. I went on a solo backpacking trip for 3 days and bought one nalgene bottle of water and trusting that my Hiker Pro would work. At the end of the first day filtering one Nalgene full, I disconnected the tubes and found that the inlet port with the quick disconnect simply broke off from the main body which renders the filter useless. I was stranded miles away on a multi-day solo so I was in a world of hurt without my filter working. I looked at the inlet port closely and this is a weakness of this design where they plastic weld the inlet port to the main body. I've used the original Hiker before and know that I need to be careful yet this still broke. If you backpack out and your Hiker Pro breaks like mine did, you are going to be screwd! Upon returned home, I called customer service and they said there is nothing I could have done to fix it..no super glue nor epoxy can fix it. They said they'll send a replacement body that I'll need to transfer parts to make it work. Katadyn said that I could have submerged the inlet port to try to get it work if out in the field. Without the inlet port with the captured white foam check valve, a submerged inlet port would draw in dirty water to the filter and continue to push clean and dirty water to your bottle. Would you drink dirty water and get sick and unable to hike back with your 40lb gear? On a solo trip, hell no!

As other reviewers have had the same inlet port breaking as mine, you have been warned. I'm going to research and buy a better water filtration system. This Hiker Pro has a design flaw that you cannot trust it out in the field. I've attached a photo where I you can see the plastic weld around the inlet port is joined to the main body. This is where the failure and design flaw is located.

I'm the quartermaster of a Boy Scout troop and we've taken several of these on backpacking trips where several of them broke. The problem is the hose coupling at the inlet of the pump. I've had two break off and one simply pop out. While the breakages may have been from careless usage, the coupling sticks out far enough to sustain damage too easily. On the one where the coupling actually came loose from the pump and popped out, Katadyn does not recommend that glue be used to re-affix it because the glue you use might not be food grade. In their manufacturing process, they weld this part in. Well, since the coupling came out when it's supposed to be permanently attached, wouldn't you think it is covered under the warranty? It is, but only for 90 days. We were out of luck.
Additionally, we've had filters that have clogged after two uses and one broken handle.
The Hiker Pro is NOT reliable.
During those same trips where we had problems with the Katadyns, some of the Scouts brought MSR water filters. They held up much better with no breakages and their ceramic filter elements can be scrubbed clean when they get clogged. Not so with the Katadyn pleated filter elements.

Great product. Extremely compact and easy to use. This is the gold standard - worth the extra money.

Two suggestions:
1. Make sure you know exactly which hoses go where before you start attaching them. They can be very difficult to remove once you put them on.
2. BE SURE to use the silicone lubricant when attaching the hoses. I tried to put one on without it and it was 10x harder to connect.

The product worked well when I first used it on a 3 day hiking trip. Unfortunately, a small piece broke on the second day. Another guy I was with had a filter as well (the same model) so my broken filter didn't cause a problem with our hiking trip.

When I got back, I called Katadyn about the broken filter. In less then a minute on the phone, they agreed to send me a new housing case for the filter. Katadyn's service was awesome! I haven't got a chance to use the product again.

I used this for a recent mountain climbing trip and I worked perfect. The water coming out of the lake and rivers tasted great.

The only thing I would suggest to improve the product would be some sort of rubber washer or seal of some kind for the bottle topper part so that it's not just loose and dangling around the top of a bottle when it's filling. Because you'll have one hand on the unit and the other hand on the pump when using it so you need something to hold the topper part to the bottle you're filling. You could just put the hose directly into the bottle or whatever though without that part if you need.

Another thing I couldn't really figure out how to do was get the rest of the water in the pump out before sealing it all back up in the bag. I tried upside down pumping (even though I think I read somewhere not to do that). It seemed like the handle didn't want to close all the way before it was empty of water and then later on while hiking any leftover water inside it managed to leak out and get stuff in my bag wet. Maybe I just needed to keep pumping air for a while or something but if there was some sort of purge valve that would have been good for the last little bit.

It's a great product though. A literal life saver when water is too hard to carry with your already 50 pound backpack. I highly recommend it.
