About the Author
Cindy M. Hogan is inspired by the unpredictable teenagers she teaches. More than anything she loves the time she has with her own teenage daughters and wishes she could freeze them at this fun age. If she's not reading or writing, you'll find her snuggled up with the love of her life watching a great movie or planning their next party. Most of all, she loves to laugh. She is the bestselling and award winning author of the Watched trilogy, a YA suspense series with a dash of romance. She has since branched off to write a mystery, Gravediggers, that won Best YA novel of 2013, a contemporary romance, Sweet and Sour Kisses, and three in a spy series, Adrenaline Rush, Hotwire, and Fatal Exchange. Her newest action/adventure novel, Kate Unmasked (Code of Silence: Book 1) is now available. She also has two novellas, The Descension in the Strange and Lovely anthology and Dangerous Truth in the Sweet and Sassy: Castle Collection

I loved this book! I love the way that Cindy Hogan writes. Her plots are amazing, they're full of twists and turns that keep you guessing and up all night reading the book to find out just what is going to happen next. I was surprised multiple times about just where the whole story line was going. And the ending....um...she had better hurry up and write more to this series!
Cindy Hogan does characters really well too, I always feel as though they are real people that I know in her books. I love that, because it makes me care about the character and what will happen to them.
Can't wait for more books about Kate!
Kate is seventeen She has been looking for her birth parents for years. When she has run out of clues she finds some fresh ones. Kate finds her parents are keeping secrets from her. Kate is also keeping big secrets from them.
Ellie is Kate's best friend. Her whole family wants to be on a reality show. They watch all of them. Go on vacation to meet them. Kate has spent the past six years going with them too.
Ellie helps Kate to find out more clues and arranges it to go New Jersey and find more clues.
Kate finds more that she thought. Meets some friends and gets into big trouble.
I would read and see what Kate gets into next.
I was given this ebook to read for free and in return I agreed to give a honest review of Kate Unmasked.
From the blurb:
The mysteries of her past consume her.
Seventeen-year-old Kate has never stopped searching for the secrets of her past - the secrets that began with her missing birth parents. After years of every lead drying up and every hope turning false, Kate finally lucks onto a promising lead.
Determined to find the truth once and for all, Kate travels to the gritty New Jersey shore. But what she finds is worse than she ever could have imagined. She can't hide from who she is, and now she must face the awful consequences of finding the very people she should have been hiding from.
Some secrets should stay dead and buried.
I’m torn about this book. I enjoyed Ms. Hogan’s writing, which is descriptive without being overly flowery, and all the elements for an exciting read are there: mystery, suspense, lies. I found Kate, the main character, rather unlikable at times, and the same went for her best friend. Though there were exciting moments that enticed me to keep reading, there were a number of events that were simply unbelievable within the context of the story. Without spoiling too, much they included a teenager going on vacation with her best friend's family without her parents knowing their true destination; the Jace subplot, the ending of which I feel went off the rails and left me wondering what the point of it was; and the major drama that happens to Kate when she finds out about her family.
That sounds like a of criticism, and there's that, but I also enjoyed aspects of this book very much. The author did a great job building suspense and intrigue, tossing in a few well-placed red herrings. Wish list: Duran was my favorite character, and I'd love to read his story.
When attempting to put my finger on why this wasn't a winner for me, I think it comes down to my wish that the author spent more time crafting events in a believable way, developing certain characters (especially Kate) more fully, and tying up the loose ends of a number of subplots. There was a lot of potential with this novel, and I'd certainly give another book from this author a try.
