But E.E. Burke's Kate Parsons is an above-average gal in the smarts department who quickly realizes Jake is more her protector than her captor. Her attraction to him is understandable once you realize Jake is the first man to want her for her alone, and not for whom she's related.
Meanwhile, Jake, in addition to being photo-shopped gorgeous, is thoughtful and patient. A lesser man might have been tempted to gag Kate (who I mentally named The Relentless). Instead Jake just dryly compares her to a woodpecker... Peck, peck, peck, which made me chuckle. Though tempted, Kate never gives up... either on her dream for the Katy Railroad nor on finding a way that she & Jake can have a future together.
I appreciate the obvious effort E.E. Burke has taken to research not only America's railroad race, but also aspects of the Cherokee Nation. I downloaded Kate's Outlaw to my Kindle, and enjoyed it so much that I bought the full, 3 novella, paperback book, Passion's Prize. I'm looking forward to future Steam! stories.
Kate Parsons was the daughter of the railroad owner, but she had never felt that her father valued her. She thought people considered her plain, blunt, and opinionated, so that's how she viewed herself. However, she knew she was smart with a good head for business, but her father never listened to her because she was a girl. Henry Stevens, chief of operations, was courting her and Kate felt it was a business move on his part and had nothing to do with love.
Jake was very attracted to her, especially her red hair. He called her Redbird, and when he sent his cousin back to hide their trail and took off with her, she knew he was protecting her. Jake was desperate to get her back home safely and Kate was falling in love with him. How can this turn out well?
I love how Ms Burke has researched the railroad in these times. The Indians, of course, did not want the railroad to go through their lands. The railroad wanted the shortest and cheapest route. Jake was a very sympathetic character. He was well educated and knew they had to fight the railroad in the courts. Kate was, indeed, a forward-thinking young lady, and was trying to come up with a workable compromise. This isn't your usual romance where everything is pretty well straight forward. Ms Burke always adds suspense and excitement to the plot.
I highly recommend this book and this series. Give it a try. I think you'll love it. I did.
Jake is such a wonderful man, he might be part Indian but he has the heart of a lion and a mind of a wolf. He just wants to help his people keep what is theirs and keep peace. He will do it by the white man’s law fight fire with fire. He doesn’t want to kidnap Kate but he has little choice it is either take her or let his cousin kill her. He needs to work out a plan to get her back to her people and keep his people save.
They were not planning on falling in love but they did now to do what is best for both their people without hurting themselves. Can they keep peace and walk away from their true feelings?
I loved this story the words flow easy, the author paints a believable story of long ago. It is very heart touching the trials they have to go through. This is a pretty clean read but it has lots of steamy passion that keeps you wanting more. This is a page turner that you will fall in love with. The characters are wonderful people who you can relate to. Each character needs to learn to trust the other to find the peace from their past. Together they make one heck of a team which can take on a nation on their fight for justices. I thought the author wrote a wonderful story and I can’t wait to read more of her work.
I was so proud of Kate for admitting she loved Jake. And proud of him for accepting her love and giving her his love. My husband is part Cherokee and I am so blessed to have his love.
Great story Elizabeth!
