Shelby is a museum volunteer, a supporter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a member of her local Historical Association, and of several lineage and community service organizations, including the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She can often be seen at book signings and historical events in the Charlotte metro area, such as re-enactments at Historic Latta Plantation and storytelling at the Museum of the Waxhaws.
Shelby is the author or editor of thirty fun-to-read books about American History, including both nonfiction and creative nonfiction, with titles ranging from her new World War One novel, "Destiny on the North Sea"; to "Free State of Jones and Parallels," a companion book for the 2016 summer movie, Free State of Jones; "Patriots, Hessians, Refugees, & Spies - Revolutionary Ancestors"; "John Markham: The Origins of Virginia’s Pirate"; "Fallen Sons: A Family’s Civil War Sacrifices," for which Shelby was interviewed by Veteran's Voice Radio; and her epic series, "Uprooted: An American Family Saga," which at present includes three volumes. Shelby makes history come alive for her readers. The characters fairly jump off the page as she shares their exciting stories.
