The interaction between the characters and animals made me feel all of their emotions.
'Katie's Rescue' is set in a small zoo in Arizona, formerly owned by Katie's deceased father. Katie has made a new life as a teacher and interpreter for the deaf. She mothers her younger sister, intent on getting the would-be-party-girl through college. One day she receives a call for help--the panther Katie hand-raised is dying. She is caught between a rock and a hard place--she has guaranteed the health of all the animals and the new owner threatens to return them if she doesn't help. But Katie witnessed a panther attack her sister when they were children and she is now terrified of animals.
"Bridget's Animal Park" is a small zoo, named for Luke's beloved sister, who died of Down's Syndrome. She loved this zoo and its animals. That's why Luke left a career in marketing and never looked back. His big heart sometimes gets him in trouble. He always says yes when an animal needs rescue, whether it's an anaconda, a camel, a bear cub, a lion, or an eagle. It seems he collects humans the same way--Jasper, the holocaust survivor and circus veteran; Fred, the retired veterinarian; Ruth, the elderly widow who 'knows where the bodies are buried'; or Meredith, the young animal-keeper, intent on advancing her career. Is it Luke's job she's after?
Enter Katie, with a passel of fears and a fair share of buried anger. Even Luke can't save them all. And leading with your heart isn't always good business. The zoo is running out of operating capital. Will "Bridget's Animal Park" survive?
I cared about the characters in "Katie's Rescue" and enjoyed this layered tale with its underlying themes of facing your fears, being willing to take risks, laying aside anger, and forgiving those who have hurt us. With several smiles and a couple tears, it is book that will be enjoyed by fans of Debbie Macomber, Rachel Hauck, and Judy Duarte.
