Editorial Reviews

In November of 1979, Andy Kaufman wrestled a woman on NBC's Saturday Night Live. He then publicly challenged women around the country by mocking them in his best bad-guy wrestler persona, telling them to "go back to the kitchen where you belong, wash the pots and pans, scrub the potatoes and raise the babies". He offered to shave his head and pay $1,000 to any woman who could beat him, adding that "she would get to marry him". The hate mail poured in, which was recently published by Process Media in the book "Dear Andy Kaufman, I Hate Your Guts!" What TV viewers didn't know was that the self-proclaimed "World's Intergender Wrestling Champion" was traveling around the country holding wrestling matches in any venue he could find: comedy clubs, mud-wrestling joints, college campuses, sports arenas, even on airplanes and in his own home (he had a wrestling mat there). Wherever there was an angry and willing female, Kaufman would wrestle her. This hysterical dvd, culled from Kaufman's private collection, compiled and edited by Kaufman's girlfriend and archivist Lynne Margulies, shows priceless, never-before-seen footage of Kaufman taunting and taking on some of his legions of female antagonists.

I have been a fan of Andy Kaufman and his subversive routines for quite some time, and I was thrilled when I heard that a new DVD of his work was coming out. This DVD is a collection of some of his various wrestling matches with women as part of his "Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion" days, it was compiled and edited from Andy's private collection by his girlfriend Lynne Margulies. That aside, I found this DVD to be mostly disappointing. The titles and menu almost make it seem like a fan-made disk that you'd get off eBay, but that didn't bother me too much, as I know that low buget productions have to be tight. Most of the matches take place in only two places, in Memphis Tennessee, and in a very small ring that appears to be in a club of some sort. On top of that, it contains footage we've already seen before. The comedy club and Memphis scenes and their subsequent interviews were already showcased on "The Midnight Special" and in "I'm From Hollywood" respectively. Also during the matches, in an attempt to keep the viewers attention, there is either alterative/rock or old vintage music playing at very high volumes, sometimes almost completely drowning out the wrestling audio. And on at least one occasion, after two songs the song that was played first was repeated again, which really got on my
nerves! The only extras that are on this disk are two never before seen matches made at the comedy store in 1979 for Andy's personal collection, and a short text Biography/Filmography. In summary, this disk wasn't as good as I hoped it would be, but if you are a hardcore, or even casual Kaufman fan, you may want to add this to your DVD library.

I bought this eagerly expecting great things. Andy Kaufman did some really funny things, one of which was proclaim himself "inter-gender wrestling champion" and challenge women to wrestle him.

However, this DVD just isn't that great.

What is shows is a long series of wrestling matches between Andy Kaufman and various women, none of whom seem to wrestle terribly well, one after another for an hour. Although Kaufman gives a funny speech about how women belong in the kitchen scrubbing potatos (er, maybe you have to see it to believe it's funny, but it is) he gives the same speech for each of the matches.

Obviously this wears thin after a while.

--And will someone please tell me why women in the 1970s were such poor wrestlers? It might have been fun to watch some big, burly lady pound him a bit, but they seemed nowhere to be seen. Where were the judo ladies or the rodeo cowgirls who should have picked him up and slammed him down? Alas, no one knows, perhaps, but they definitely were not on the first hour of matches.

Sadly, this DVD is ultimately pretty boring. Whoever woulda thunk it?
