Susan Dayley has an insane imagination and I was just swept away with the details of the machine work and descriptions throughout the house.
Step into this novel for a adventure in a time little remembered in history. 5 stars!
Everything about this book was cool. I loved the idea of the house. Everything about this book is imaginative! I read it in just two sittings. It was addictive and I can’t wait for book 2. Really, my favorite part about this novel (YA by the way), is the eerie feeling that follows you throughout the chapters. Even though it isn’t technically a Halloween story, it is perfect for this season.
My other favorite part of this story, aside from enjoying a good scare, was the environment. The details in the house are amazing. There are puzzles around literally every corner and the author has clearly done her research and created a character of the house itself. I also liked the quirky real characters, like Parker and Mason and with their unusual talents.
Fans of the TV series, The Ghost Whisperer, would probably enjoy this book as well. So if you like a clean ghost story, give this one a try!
The sub-themes explored in this book that resonated with me include family upheaval or discordance and the challenges of maintaining one's identity and trying to fit in with family values and expectations. The story left several chills down my spine, but it was not gory or dark horror. It had all the elements of a ghost story - scary, intriguing and captivating. Susan Dayley displays her master story telling abilities in this book which will no doubt be thoroughly enjoyed by readers that enjoy ghost stories.
