I don't get any hard starts and the flow is consistent. I have used both a cartridge and the eyedropper method and had no issues at all with either.
That said, I knocked off a star because I would hardly call this a fine nib. My Pilot Metropolitan fine nib produces a line at least twice as thin. Since I have small, narrow handwriting, that means I can't and don't use this pen as often as I like because even on higher-quality Rhodia paper it makes my handwriting (I write in cursive out of habit) less legible than my aforementioned Pilot or Lamy Safari. I ordered the extra fine nib replacement but found very, very little difference between the two lines. So, I use this for whenever I need to print something, usually on a Post-It note or something, but not as a daily writer, which is what I purchased it for.

I like that the screw-on lid ensures that it won't slip off and leave a pool of ink somewhere, likewise, the coloured ink cartridge options bring back the joy and fun of writing again.
