Editorial Reviews

Who says "they don't make them like they used to?" Kayla is a throwback to the days when family films made you feel good—while teaching you a thing or two about life. It focuses on a young boy who still can't accept the eight-year-old disappearance, and apparent death, of his explorer father. He cries out for solace, while keeping his mother and well-meaning stepfather at a stony-faced distance. Then, one day, in the snowy wilderness, he encounters a wolf who looks exactly like the dog that led his dad's sled. Despite the hostility of the townspeople, who fear the wolf is devouring their livestock, the boy bonds with this dog, Kayla, who teaches him a lot about love, loyalty, and self-sacrifice. This touchingly performed and beautifully photographed film will move you to both tears and cheers, particularly in the rousing finish, where boy and dog compete for more than just victory in the annual dogsled race. This is family entertainment at its most classic! Extra Features: Elizabeth Van Steenwyk: Biography of the Author; Kayla's Quebec: Historical Background; Thoughts To Be Shared With Friends & Family; Previews of Additional Questar Family Films.

This was a "mistake", my buying this film, as I intended to only put it on my WatchList to maybe rent later because I was one of the first to rate it & probably view it. I hit the wrong (right?) button & purchased a wonderful movie instead. Great drama, wonderful acting, very edge of the seat experience and heart-warming . Great for any age or spiritual and moral persuasion. This story takes place in beautiful snowy Canada in the 1920's. Might sound "blah" but is definitely a keeper to share with anyone at all especially after some films that make you blush & turn your head even when viewing alone Enjoy!!

Excellent picture quality, great story, pleasing dialog. DVD extras are wonderful and easy-to-use, should motivate further study. "I could see lots of areas of inquiry for kids: wild dogs, exploration, sledding, dog training, music, carpentry." The children especially liked the interactive material. "Everything was wonderful, but I wanted more." "It was interesting to know about the author because I might like to read some of her other books." "We loved the story. We laughed, we cried, and we cheered." Best for ages 8 to 12.

The movie was good, but because of some intense scenes, it's best for older kids. There is a scene where a man kills a poisoned dog with a shovel, to put it out of its suffering. ( The shovel is shown only shoulder high, but it's still pretty intense for a little kid to see.) Also, there's a scene where a dog is shot and is shown bleeding and lame. The dog doesn't die, but it looks like he might. So if you don't think your child can handle scenes like these, you better not get this movie - or wait until they're older.

Okay I'm the first so I will have "me" way with my review. My beloved youngest introduced me to discovering the love shared between meself and our dog (a pug). Me daughters will have a copy of "Hatchi" for Christmas and we will all enjoy watching this simple but beautiful movie that is about, simply LOVE... Take a few minutes of you life. The movie isn't perfect except for the joy that is offers between life and those creatures that ONLY want to share it with us...

Simply, Kayla is a whole-family movie about kids and animals, and one of best of that kind. And if you like Kayla too, and if you are lucky to find it, give a chance to an old Croatian movie "Vuk samotnjak" - a boy, a wild dog, snow, mountains... Different from most Croatian movies which deal with local events in a local manner, hardly understood to foreigners, this one can be understandable worldwide (apart general knowledge about WWII there's nothing you're expected to know before it starts).

My son loved this. It kept this attention the whole time. He does love dog movies and often watches them. It was a great family movie. It was ok for me but my son loved it and that's what really matters.

This was a really good show. You never really know for sure whether it is actually Kayla, but let us not give the plot away. It is a wonderful family show. It is also a coming of age show and a coming to terms or acceptance show. Also on display is a loyalty and trust. There is a commitment to friends even though it is hard to determine at times if he truly is a friend or just using someone talents.
