Over the years, I thought about Miles but didn’t feel that I should grieve. Feel sad for his death, yes, but not to cry for days on end or letting the grief overwhelm me, since we only knew each other online. It wasn’t until my father’s death, my best friend getting sick last year, re-reading the email and portions of the book when I realized that all along, we really were friends, no matter the distance or circumstances that separated us. Come to think of it, he had thousands of friends the world over. One of my favorite quotes from the book is “Be there for somebody else when they are going through hard times—this is the real measure of friendship.” One of the most important lessons Miles taught me is loyalty. Being there for someone in their darkest hour. How to love to the fullest. How a tragedy can be turned into something beautiful. Courage, bravery, and humanity, I could go on and on.
Miles is still making an impact, seven years later. So much so to the point that I am currently working on a story that is loosely based on his life. I urge everyone to read this book, short but powerful. Haunting but beautiful. It will break your heart but will leave you in absolute awe. I will always be grateful for the friendship we shared and will always share.
An old soul, ever optimistic and hopeful, Miles found joy and beauty in every day. He inspired all who came into his aura, whether in person or through his blog. Far more than just a cancer story, this book is the journal of a life well lived, written by a brilliant, kind, humorous, caring young man who just happened to be writing from the midst of a horrific battle with cancer. Jon Levin collaborates with his son, contributing context, details, and the Levin family's perspective to Miles' own words. Jon's love and pride for Miles are clear throughout the book.
Miles wanted us to remember him as "someone who maintained their light through their darkest journey." He realized that wish, while having a worldwide impact through his blog, newspaper and TV stories, and now this book. Miles' death was a loss to the world, but as readers of his book will see, his life is a gift to be treasured and appreciated.
