This is good but not great music. Yes, there are some "moments" on this cd but it does not even come close to their first effort. To me this album misses the mark from the standpoint of delivery. The first cd, Rad Zapping, was pretty fresh, there were some good samples, and a lot of energetic twists. Keep Guessin', on the other hand, almost feels like a Malkmus production which, essentially, provides little opportunity for improvement or exploration. Overall, I am looking forward to the next album to gain insight into where these guys are going.
I listened to these songs live a number of times before the album was released, and I was pleased to hear that Hockey Night's energy and originality came through in the recording. The moment I see the photo of the album cover, I get the first track in my head and feel the need to hear it right away. Catchy, fun, danceable.
It's been a while since I had a "favorite band," but after "Keep Guessin'," Hockey Night is IT. This is THE BEST album I've heard in a long time. Maybe ever.
I don't get it - I hear this band all the time on XM yet nobody knows them. I don't know what to compare them to, but they have style. Many of the songs build slowly, others - "Saturday Night Gallup" - grab you from the start. They employ smart and salient lyrics with catchy melodies - while still being playful and sanguine, and somewhat surprisingly strong guitar solos. "Renegades" and "Greet the Dawn" are two of the better songs of last year. This is just damn good music. If nothing else, grab those two songs off of iTunes. Then try the album and if you like it talk about it. There is no reason for more people not to know this band.
My favorite band is Pavement and H. Night sounds similar. This CD, as well as their others, are 10 out of 10! I listen to their CDs a lot and don't get tired of them.
