Yes I loved their romance and heated young lust moments but the other challenges they both faced had me truly riveted to the pages. Sometimes I was scared, sometimes I had tears in my eyes and there were times when I smiled and laughed because I was so happy for them. You do go on an incredible journey with these two characters being they are so young, yet they are both really old souls underneath with what they have been dealt in life.
Whilst the Synopsis may lead you to believe that Layla has so many challenges to conquer, I found myself totally surprised with the turn of events with Landen and how it really will have you wondering how their love story will end. There are lots of shocks, secrets and characters that change and will make you love or hate them.
A beautiful romance story that I will treasure and remember - Layla and Landen - love conquers.
I love that this book pulls you in from the very first sentence. I love Landen because he's a soccer player and because he loves Layla so much he'll do anything for her. From the moment he meets Layla he falls in love with her. He wants to tear down the walls she's built to protect herself. He wants to protect her from anything that will cause her any sort of harm.
My heart broke for Layla and the way she was treated by her peers. All she wanted was to be invisible so she could get through high school and then start a new life in college. But Landen is the only one who sees her for the first time in a long time. He doesn't let her hide. But like Layla, Landen has his own secret.
Both Layla and Landen have fears that stem from something in their past. Their fears hold them back and for Layla it makes it easier to push people away. Layla's fears keep her from living life. It's easy to see why she holds back. She's been hurt so much that hiding away is easier than living.
If you're thinking of buying this story, do it now. This special limited edition has Layla and Landen's backstory of how they met. I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for the sequel. I want to read it but I hope it doesn't break my heart. This one has me chocking back tears.
I would lie to you if I said Keep me still is a great book. If I had bought it as a standalone it would have earned two and half or three stars top, depending my mood. The story was nice, the characters likable. I understood them, thanks to the alternate point of view. Extra points for making an incredible job of building both their psychology and voices.
But I felt like the book was a little "fast". Thank God, for Let you leave (the prequel, a novella) and Hold us close (sequel, novella). It turned a nice enough story into a great one.
Why ? It was thorough. It was complete. It was what you really want with love stories : to feel that beyond the book, the characters will still be good to each other and for each other. And, in a way, to feel you would love your life to have a little of theirs.
Now, my review for each stories :
Let you leave
Layla had a tough life. When she was thirteen, her parents where murdered... Right before her. And it broke her, both mentally and physically : she's had seizures ever since it happened. She is now seventeen and goes back to high school, after being homeschooled for three years.
She is alone. Invisible.
Enters Landen. Nice looking. Funny. Broken : he never really had a home. Never really had friends. Sure as hell doesn't have a real family.
Though you know it won't end well if you read the summary, you want them to end up together. And it breaks your heart that they don't.
Keep me still
Layla has made it through high school and begins college. But her chance at a new life is tainted by two ghosts : her medical condition and Landen. Of course, there is nothing to do about the first one, but she is disgusted to know how little control she has about her life. And how short it could be. And Landen ? He has missed her. So much. He was nothing but a shadow of himself during the months they were apart. Yeah, he fell for her. Bad. But does she still want him ? He has hurt her, he sees that. And it could be worse : he is hiding a big secret from her.
One that could destroy everything he wishes to build with her.
Hold us close
There is a chance for Layla to get a long life. But she refuses to see it through before... Around nine months.
Landen can't live with himself. He has everything he ever wished for but his father haunts him. He hears his voice inside him, corrupting him. Can he be what Layla needs ? He is on the edge. And now, it may be time for him to face his fears, so he can, finally, be the person she sees in him.
