On the evening before Thanksgiving, Hal Chase, a guard in the San Francisco County Jail, drives to the airport to pick up his stepbrother for the weekend. When they return, Hal’s wife, Katie, has disappeared without a clue.
By the time Dismas Hardy hears about this, Katie has been missing for five days and the original Missing Persons case has become a suspected homicide—with Hal as the prime suspect. And the lawyer he wants for his defense is none other than Hardy himself.
Hardy calls on his friend, former homicide detective Abe Glitsky, to look into the case, and there proves to be no shortage of possible suspects aside from Hal. As he probes further, Glitsky learns of an incident at the San Francisco jail, where Hal works—only one of many questionable inmate deaths that have taken place there. Then, as more clues surface, Hal is arrested and finds himself an inmate in the very jail where he used to work, a place full of secrets he knows all too well.
Against this backdrop of conspiracy and corruption, ambiguous motives and suspicious alibis, an obsessed Glitsky closes in on the elusive truth. As other deaths begin to pile up he realizes, perhaps too late, that the next victim might be himself.

In this installment, Abe is the central character. He has abruptly retired from his job as head of the Homicide Division of the Department as the result of a trivial political argument and is completely at loose ends. Meanwhile, Dismas has acquired a client, Hal Chase, whose wife has disappeared and is already being accused by her family of somehow doing away with her. Because this man is a deputy sheriff, and the Sheriff’s office has long carried an odor of corruption, Dismas feels there may be a connection. He thus needs an investigator with connections inside the SFPD. Abe is the obvious candidate. He reluctantly agrees to come aboard, but he feels he is crossing over to the dark side. Lawyers are a policeman’s natural enemy.
Shortly afterward, the body of Katie Chase, Hal’s wife, is indeed found in a patch of woods near their house. She has been shot, and the bullet has come from a standard-issue police revolver. Hal is swiftly indicted and jailed. His mother, Ruth, assumes the task of caring for his and Katie’s two children.
It is here that a reader can have doubts that he is still reading a book written by John Lescroart. Not only is Dismas, after fourteen outings, no longer the central character, but Abe and Dismas approach the question of Hal’s innocence in diametrically opposite ways. To Dismas’ dismay, Abe uses the weapon of frontal assault on the corruption at the jail, rather than helping Dismas construct a reasoned defense for the courtroom. Abe’s technique is to kick the hornet’s nest repeatedly and observe what crawls/flies out each time. Proceeding from a series of questionable, and little-investigated, deaths of inmates, he uncovers an amazing network of relationships, legal and illegal, which entangle the Chief Deputy, Adam Foster, if not the Sheriff himself, in a web of lies. Unfortunately, none of this is of much value to Hal. Finally, after pulling back in exhaustion and frustration, Abe sees an inconsistency he missed in the preliminary investigations. This reorients the whole case, and everything now locks together. Hal walks free.
A happy ending, but I feel that the relationship between Abe and Dismas has changed forever. We shall see.
Dismas is a complicated guy who adores his wife & children and really loves the law. His understanding of the law and his courtroom skills are among the best. I have a very bad habit of scanning down a page quickly when I am bored; I never miss a word in a Lescroart novel. His characters are so well developed I feel as if I know each of them and would really like to hang out with them.
This venture out in The Keeper is one of the very best. I think I am pretty good at figuring out who the bad guys are but this one kept me guessing. I love that Wes (Dismas' former law partner) is the DA and still wearing his crazy t-shirts.
The Dismas Hardy books all take place in SanFrancisco, one of my favorite cities and clearly one of John Lescroart's. He captures so much of "the cool" of the city that even if you have never been there you can get a real feel of the city's unique character and characters.
I am sure many reviewers will recap the story so I won't bother. I just want anyone reading this review to know they will love this book. You don't have to read them in order but, if this is your first Dismas Hardy experience, and you love it which I think you will, start at the beginning and learn all about this crew.
Glitsky is now a retired inspector who is helping his friend and Defense Attorney Dismas Hardy with the investigation of the Disappearance of a clients wife. While the DA wants to D charge the husband with murder Abe has other ideas.
When the investigation seems to overlap with a string of inmate deaths at the County Jail the mystery rises to a level that uses all of Glitsky's investigative abilities.
Knowing these characters since the beginning of the series they are as you always remember them. As a reader of this series I an glad the author doesn't feel the need to over explain all the other books within this one new book. John Lescroart gives enough background to let this be your first Dismis Hardy/Abe Glitsky of which there are two separate and interwoven sets of books. Without having to know all the backstory.
Please go back and read the others if you can they are worth every minute and most are available on Audible.
As I listened to this book I thought several times who did what to whom but The twist and turns in this story leave you saying I didn't see that coming, again and again.

This one has the usual page turning, multi-threaded mystery style I have come to love in this series of books.
There are several plausible villians, and plenty of Lescroart's trademark whimsy and humour to keep the story rattling along.
I love the central group of characters in these books, and its great that we can follow their lives as the years go by.
Brilliant, thanks John for another good read.
