Legend, lore, history and fantasy embrace to take you on a ride through Hell in this dark fantasy.
You will see the thick blood of vampyres splattering onto the floor and walls as the protagonists fight guns a-blazing and swords a-swirling. The scent of cherry will permeate your nostrils as the gunslinging, foul-mouthed priest wipes out entire colonies of hellbeasts to protect the world from an ungodly reign of terror, cigarillo in mouth. For those with a dark side and hideous idea of evil, it’s a fun read, giving you everything from hellhounds and near-immortal knights to dark prophets and fallen angels, though the lines may blur a bit. Exceptionally visually descriptive every scene is played out like a movie script that will have you fighting for your soul against demonic forces while you dream.
The sheer amount of historical detail surrounding the Catholic Church is staggering and has been researched extensively for The 2-Bru Krew to have built such a riveting and profound plot. It’s a very long story which holds the readers interest throughout the history of divine relics and their powers which have long been discussed and believed hidden by the Catholic Church. The story could also be considered a critique of believers and their behavior and faith. The authors have also studied angelic lore and legend, which is built into the story throughout using dialogue and sometimes flashbacks of Drago who has been cursed to walk the earth far too long. There are a couple of occasions where the dialogue becomes a bit “preachy,” but considering the main characters are a priest and a crusader, it is understandable and forgivable and doesn’t take away from the intense action or rich plot. Certainly, Von Luther doesn’t give away his piety through vocabulary or behavior, save slaying beasts of the netherworld.
The foreward of the book contains a list of characters with descriptions, which I read but felt was unnecessary, especially after reading the book. I’m not a reader who requires a list of characters, but other readers prefer an introduction when there are several main and supporting characters. Even though there are occasional grammatical or typographical errors, there is nothing within that takes away from the readability of Keepers of the Gate.
Whether you read if for the sheer enjoyment of an action-packed, unnerving dark fantasy or you read it for the deeper history, legend, and meaning to be found within, you will most certainly be entertained by The 2-Bru Krew’s Keepers of the Gate.
