Like most of her other books, this is a sweet, low-angst M/M romance with a friends-to-lovers motif, which picks up the storyline of one of the side characters in her previous book, Keeping Casey, whose main characters make a couple of cameo appearances in Keeping Kellan. Though each is a standalone, one of the things I enjoy about Aislin’s books is the continuity of characters between the "Stick Side" series and, now, the "Keeping Him" series. It instills a feeling of community and gives her main characters continued life.
In Keeping Kellan, most of the difficulties are on Brant’s side — he’s been estranged from his mother and stepfather for the past two years. Both his stepfather and stepbrother are homophobic jerks and he resents his mother for her tacit agreement with the slurs and bullying through her refusal to confront her husband or show Brant the support he deserves and desperately craves. While this doesn’t cause a rift in the main characters’ relationship with one another, it creates one of the biggest conflicts that requires resolution for a true happy ending.
If you are looking for charming characters and a sweet romance in a gorgeous setting, I highly recommend Keeping Kellan.
I appreciated that it moved beyond the college/new adult setting, with Brant now 26 and Kellan 30 (I think). While Brant is working on "what's next," he knows what he wants and doesn't want as he figures it out.
