Kelly owns and works in her coffee shop in the Oregon coastal town of Cedar Bay. All seems well, especially as her relationship with the sheriff seems to be progressing smoothly. One morning one of her waitresses doesn't show up for work and later her body is dragged from the ocean by a fisherman. This popular, college-bound young woman is found to have a hidden life. Of the many suspects in this quiet town, who was involved.
The ultimate clue is withheld from the reader until near the end, even Kelly didn't see it.
Overall a smoothly written cozy but Kelly goes waaaaay beyond what a person would normally do because she's described as inquisitive (but she doesn't think it through and someday it will catch up with her!!).

The book was so short it didn't allow for much description or development. The mystery itself was interesting. The setting was a small coastal town in Oregon and the coffee shop seemed inviting. Here are some problems: The characters were not very likeable. Kelly somehow did not come off as an amateur sleuth so much as an annoying busybody. Yet every time she went to question someone they ;managed to spill their guts immediately giving up the exact information she wanted ("I know I shouldn't be telling you this, but..."). Her boyfriend, the sheriff, did not come off as a very professional law enforcement officer, letting his girlfriend inform her friends that their daughter's body had been recovered from the bay, and sharing all the details of a homicide investigation with her. Then there was the high school teacher who has been busted for child porn in another state and this didn't seem to bother anyone. And kindly old Doc who performed an abortion on a young girl who died. Not his fault he says, yet his medical license was revoked and the girl's parents won a multimillion dollar settlement against him. Because he didn't want to lose his family inheritance and heirlooms, he ran away to another state and was hiding. Again, nobody seemed to mind...what?? Then, to top off everything, the perp turns up out of nowhere in the final pages! If Kelly "mentally crossed her fingers" one more time while she was lying I think I would have tossed my Kindle across the room!
Just to be fair I read the next installment in the series," Murder at Jade Cove" and sadly, my review of that book would be the same. I enjoy cozies, but I will not continue with this series or this author.

Almost unreadable. Excruciatingly bad dialog.

I really quick read. If you want a fun book to read, and don't have lots of time, this one is for you. This would be the perfect beach book! The story is well written and not real predictible, which I like.

Kelly is written as a middle-aged woman, yet she uses childish excuses such as mentally crossing her fingers while she lies and gets into dangerous situations. There is just nothing about Kelly that is interesting, intelligent, or endearing. Character has potential but author needs to stop using hackneyed tricks.

I have to agree with reviewer ST. However, I too read through the end to see who did it. Was simply shocked that no consequences were written in for the teacher/coach who faked his credentials and had child porn on his computer. Those little details seemed to be forgotten by the end of the story.

There are a lot of details in this book that bother me, along with an underlying self-righteous, conservative, element. But on to the details. First, Oregon State is an exemplary institution with a mediocre football program. They would not care if a football player had a pregnant girlfriend. He would not be the first. Second, thousands of students apply to Oregon State for scholarships with 4.0 GPAs, but very few get full scholarships. The likelihood of two students from the same tiny town getting full-ride scholarships is almost nil. The teacher, Chris, would have to had to undergo a background check and been fingerprinted in ordered to have been hired to teach in an Oregon school district. His issues would have been discovered and he would never been hired to teach in Cedar Bay. And worst of all, I vehemently object to how Madison's father's alcoholism and abusive behavior is blamed on him being an atheist. In reality, atheists generally are highly educated, reasonable, logical people. This was the first and last book by Dianne Harman I will read.

The first of the series of Cedar Bay books was very good. I liked how the story flowed & how the characters interacted. The actual criminal wasn't revealed until the end & didn't make the list of suspects. Ready to start book 2.

I loved Dianne Harman's writing style! As of late I have started
several different mystery novels, by different authors, only to
put them down unfinished. I get bogged down when an author
uses so much descriptive language that it confuses the storyline.
Dianne is very descriptive without detracting from the story. In fact, her style of writing moves the mystery along so fast that
I have a hard time putting the book (I pad) down. Thank you Dianne for a plethora of exciting books to look forward to. I
must pace myself so as not to devour them too fast.
