I took this bag out on a weekend trip to do a section of the PCT. After a long day on the trail, I was really looking forward to crawling into it that night. The temperature took a nose dive and my buddy and I found ourselves in our bags sitting around the campsite. He also had a Cosmic Down 20 (his was a much older model-it was red).
When it came time for bed the temperature was in the lower 30's, I slept in some wool socks, a base layer shirt and my fleace jacket (somehow my base layer pants didn't make it into my bag) and was warm for most of the night. At one point the temperature dropped into the mid 20's and I woke up with cold feet and legs. I threw a couple of hand warmers into the toe box and once they started working I slept comfortably the rest of the night.
I'm looking forward to many more nights in the backcountry with this bag!
Amateur campers take note: a sleeping bag won't keep you toasty warm all the way down to its rated temperature. It will keep you alive though! Start adding layers of clothing when the outside temperature drops and you can stay comfortable to the rated temperature though.
This is probably the best beginner sleeping bag you can buy. I've used 4 other sleeping bags (both polyester and down) that I've borrowed from friends, and this Kelty bag outweighs them all by far. Sure, you can purchase other sleeping bags (mostly cheap polyester-filled bags) for cheaper on Amazon, but you won't be getting the quality and effectiveness of this reputable Kelty bag. Sure, you can purchase other down sleeping bags with higher fill power, but you'll be looking to spend around $250-300.
The Kelty Cosmic 20 was upgraded recently to now have 600 Fill Power DriDown. Down keeps you warm at night while being super lightweight and also fluffy. Who doesn't love a fluffy sleeping bag? This bag only weighs 2lbs and 13 oz and can be stuffed to only 8 x 14 in.
I'm a 5'9" man weighing 165 lbs and I have no issues with the Regular size of this bag. It might be a little snug for some people, but then again, it's a mummy sleeping bag. It's designed this way to keep you warm.
So far I've only tested this bag in 50 degree weather. I normally sleep cold, but this bag kept me hot. In fact, it kept me a little too hot. One of the nights, I actually woke up fully drenched in sweat because I was so hot, but I don't really consider this as a Con since the bag is rated for 20 degrees. I ended up opening the bag and sleeping with my back directly against my sleeping pad with the sleeping bag as a blanket. I slept perfectly for the rest of the night. And I was only wearing a t-shirt and shorts.
Normally this bag sells for around $160 which is a decent price for a great sleeping bag. Again, comparable bags run in the range of $250-300. If you ever see this bag on sale (which actually happens 2-3 times a year), I highly recommend that you get it!
The second night I attempted to zip up the sleeping bag the zipper disintegrated in my hands rendering the bag into a very warm, although very drafty blanket. I made several attempts to repair the zipper in the field with no luck. My best defense against the cold was to pin the open side down on my sleeping pad and hope not to move at all during the next FIVE nights.
Needless to say I am VERY disappointed in the construction of the zipper.
The bag itself was, (on the first night) extremely warm, comfortable, lightweight, and easy to use. I was even able to easily unzip the foot box to help cool off my feet when they started to get warm on the first evening.
I ordered the long bag and was very happy to have the extra room, I'm 6' tall and the bag fit very well. I would definitely recommend the longer bag if your any taller than 6' unless you want a very tight fit.
I am giving this bag two stars simply because the "blanket" did keep me warm and dry when I was able to wrap it up tightly around my cold body. I can only imagine what it might have been like to be able to use it as it was originally intended-- A sleeping BAG, not a sleeping BLANKET.
My hopes are that this is a one time incident and that the quality of Kelty products and services aren't going the way of the landline, dead and gone.
If the zipper holds up. I think this can be an excellent sleeping bag that can serve you well, right to the 20 degree threshold as advertised.
I have requested a replacement or refund from the sellers.. Hopefully I will get a positive response or I'm the guy stuck with a $150.00 sleeping blanket.
I will update this review when I hear back from the sellers or Kelty.

I was able to receive a partial refund for the bag from the sellers. I was also able to send the sleeping bag to Kelty's repair facility in Georgia to have the zipper replaced. Zippers fixed free of charge. Ill have to wait until another week long adventure stress test before I can give this a real rating. I will bump it another star for both the seller's and Kelty's efforts to fix the problem.
