4.0 out of 5 stars Big tent.
By arrowspace on August 11, 2021
I just got it today. I thought I had ordered the 4 man, but the bigger 6 man arrived. So I went into the side yard to give it a trial.
Stake the 4 corners. Then put poles together and slide them through the corner sleeves. This is a bit of an issue. The sleeves are continuous, that means there's no space from one side to the other to grab and push the poles through (my previous tents had spaces between pole sleeve sections). The fabric sleeves tend to bunch up and not allow the pole to smoothly slide across. I managed to get them placed in a few minutes. Then step into the door and lift up the center. This gives you just enough height to get the poles on 4 corners to bite into the ground. Then go around all corners and place them into the corner grommets. For a hot summer day/night, this is all you need! There's big walls of see through mesh on 3 sides, allowing total ventilation. Hang your battery powered fan inside! There's still privacy material at the bottom all around for a couple of feet from the base. Kelty should have provided a flyless photo that showed how much air is possible. So. Now the rainfly. A bit trickier for one person. I used the wind to help me float the rain fly over the tall top of the tent. Match up the blue staking strips so you have it aimed right (make sure "Kelty" shows on the outside). Buckle them in, pulling all of the corners as loose as they will go.
Now to install the "ridge pole" pull up the fly opposite the door from outside the tent and seat the ridge pole into the sleeve under the fly, it's a tight fit. Run it up under the fly over the top of the tent towards the door. Now go around to the door and stand inside so you can use the cloth finger loop attached to the pole sleeve to pull the fly away from you till you can pull down on pole and out on fly to get the other end of the pole seated in there. Yes, I had to reread the instructions and they didn't even mention using the loops to help you pull. Without them I couldn't do it.
You can still increase the ventilation under the fly by using the ties on the outside of the fly all around. Pull out the cord and stake it out from the tent. If you need the fly, it will probably be cool anyway.
This tent would for sure be easier set up with 2 people, but on my first try I did it alone, though I learned a couple of lessons that will make it more straight forward next time. You totally need to practice the set up at home first.
In the photo of the rain fly, I don't have the fly pulled out and staked. You would WANT to do this IRL! When I camped in SE Colorado a few weeks ago, my son's tent had those guy strings to hold out the sides of the rain fly. I tripped over them EVERY time I walked by, couldn't get it through my head to avoid them.
This is a nice big tent once set up, and just takes a bit of practice and caution till you have it down pat.
