Additionally, coir pith contains some natural nutrients, such as potassium and phosphorus, contributing to its role as a beneficial soil amendment.
  • 🌱Each block expands to 17 gallons of potting mix.Widely used in horticulture and gardening, coir pith serves various purposes. It can be used as a soil conditioner to improve soil structure, as a component in potting mixes, and even as a mulching material. STARTING: How Much Water to Begin
First time buyer of coco-coir. Here's what you need to know to begin using this product.I put the brick of coir in a wheel barrel with 4 gallons of warm/hot tap water. Use better water if you're extremely serious about ph and all that. I don't go to those measures personally.Walk away. I came back the next day to find the coir brick (saturated) and I began to break it up. 4 HOT gallons of water was perfect. The end of this review is to tell the reader how many US Gallon containers this will fill. If you T A P the pot on a hard surface a few 2-3 times to settle the potting mix you will get 17 gallons of media. If you don't T A P the container you will get barely short of 20 gallons of media. Call it 20.My third photo I made a "snowball" with the potting mix to see if it held together and it DOES NOT. That tells you that it's the perfect moisture consistency (Not TOO WET) to mix in your other ingredients AT THIS LEVEL OF soil-media consistency. My attempt at the snowball fell apart 100% and nothing stuck to my hand. It's the perfect level for mixing in your other organics and perlite or vermiculite or whatever else you may use; sand, etc.Hope this helps you'all!

Wow! Fully impressed by the rate of expansion, absorbency, drainage, and texture. This is my forst experience replacing peat in my homemade potting mix with coconut coir from a brick. I used 1/5 of the large brick to make the equivalent of an 8 cu ft bag of potting mix. I had zero trouble reconstituting it. It was super fast. I had my husband use a vise and sawsall to cut my brick up for me. Then I put one of the 5 slices into a large trash bag in the shower, turned the water to hot and doused it good. I was afraid of overwatering, so I stopped and used my hands to break apart the few chunks that were still semi dry, and was surprised to find how easily it came apart. Within just a few minutes of hand crumbling and adding more water a little at a time, it had grown to 8x its original size and was ready to use. I added about 1 cu ft of perlite (light volcanic mineral balls that keep roots loose for further transplants) and 2 1gal buckets of soil with wormcasings from the area of my yard where bad apples fall. Perfect, dark rich potting soil with great drainage and organic nutrients without the need to haul around heavy bags or pay so much at the store. Repotted my tomatoes already and my order just got here this morning. Super pleased and will be buying more for next spring! Hoffman 16504 Horticultural Perlite, 18 Quarts

Let me start by saying I keep reptiles... Lots of reptiles, its hard to find an acceptable solution for those that want a naturalistic substrate that is cost effective when you have 10 enclosures that total up to around 140 foot of floor space. That is where this product shines. It holds humidity extremely I've not had any mold issues even with some of my more humid enclosures. Promotes phenomenal sheds in all my snakes with close monitoring of humidity and temps. It is a fine coir so for smaller reptile species feeding wet prey items is not recommended as it risks impaction and nobody wants that! I would compare this to any number of the other Forrest floor type bedding's that are sold in the pet trade. Be warned though one brick of this will easily fill a large rubber maid tote with coir. So if you are looking to fill a large amount of small enclosures or a few rather large enclosures this a definite option. *A side note... I only gave the product 4 stars because i have found strings and plastic debris in my most recent order of this product*

I love the convenience of storing small blocks rather than big sacks of soil. And I really like having a lightweight option; I am weary of lugging heavy sacks of much of anything around. This is a coarser product than what you need for germinating seeds, but seed-starting coir blocks are available, and I recommend them for germinating seeds; a lot of potting soils peddled for seed starting are too coarse, and given that a seed already has all its necessary nutrients inside it, the finer coir is a very nice option because it doesn't have all the additives. But this grade of coir is excellent for repotting seedlings and mature plants, and it functions well as a mulch.

I am well familiar with the coir blocks, but this is the largest one I've ever bought. Be advised that it makes a LOT of potting soil, and hydrating it requires a bit of thought (certainly more thought than I gave it initially). Choose a large--and I mean LARGE--container to hydrate it in, and choose one that is wide and low (like a standard galvanized bucket or an oversize plastic storage bin) rather than anything that is taller than it is wide. My experience shows why:

I thought I was safe hydrating the block in a tall, sturdy plastic container of ample size that I use to empty large sacks of dogfood in, and the result was a fiasco. The plastic bowed out to the extent that it seemed close to bursting. The container was large enough, but the water was trickling down at a slow pace that hydrated the coir unevenly. I was right there to witness my mistake, so I tried quickly to transfer it out of my ill-chosen container. Unfortunately the mass seemed stuck and would not budge. I knew I would have to add more water to get it unstuck, but what if the lower chunks hydrated before the top ones and burst the plastic? I had to get water to the lower chunks quickly enough that it would budge but wouldn't have enough time to fluff up fully.

If you've never seen the episode of "I Love Lucy" that focuses on her first bread-baking experience, watch it sometime. I was as rattled as Lucy Ricardo when her bread dough engulfed her stove and threatened to take over her kitchen.

Save your nerves. Be smarter than I was. Give some thought AT THE OUTSET to what kind of container you need, and don't choose anything tall.
