I am well familiar with the coir blocks, but this is the largest one I've ever bought. Be advised that it makes a LOT of potting soil, and hydrating it requires a bit of thought (certainly more thought than I gave it initially). Choose a large--and I mean LARGE--container to hydrate it in, and choose one that is wide and low (like a standard galvanized bucket or an oversize plastic storage bin) rather than anything that is taller than it is wide. My experience shows why:
I thought I was safe hydrating the block in a tall, sturdy plastic container of ample size that I use to empty large sacks of dogfood in, and the result was a fiasco. The plastic bowed out to the extent that it seemed close to bursting. The container was large enough, but the water was trickling down at a slow pace that hydrated the coir unevenly. I was right there to witness my mistake, so I tried quickly to transfer it out of my ill-chosen container. Unfortunately the mass seemed stuck and would not budge. I knew I would have to add more water to get it unstuck, but what if the lower chunks hydrated before the top ones and burst the plastic? I had to get water to the lower chunks quickly enough that it would budge but wouldn't have enough time to fluff up fully.
If you've never seen the episode of "I Love Lucy" that focuses on her first bread-baking experience, watch it sometime. I was as rattled as Lucy Ricardo when her bread dough engulfed her stove and threatened to take over her kitchen.
Save your nerves. Be smarter than I was. Give some thought AT THE OUTSET to what kind of container you need, and don't choose anything tall.
