With his long experience with Kendo and personal relationships with outstanding Sensei from Japan, the author is able to impart his thoughts and the teachings of others in clear language that is neither too dry or technical nor overly esoteric. Although there are a number of English-language books on Kendo available, very few focus on the deeper meanings of this Budo-art and give it a personal twist. It is almost as if we are invited onto the author's continuing kendo journey and can appreciate where we are in comparison, on our own kendo journey.
The first article, a translation of teachings from the late Toshio-Sensei, I believe sets the tone for the rest of the book. Quite frankly I was blown away by the clarity and spirituality of Toshio- Sensei's writings, setting up the perfect frame of mind to read the remaining 51 articles with a deep satisfaction and resolve to work even harder at improving my Kendo on all levels.
Whether you are a beginner or advanced kendo practictioner or someone with an interest in Budo-art philosophy, this book is a welcome addition to the library and a wonderful resource to go back to again and again.
Given it is the long Labour-Day weekend here in Canada and the US, most of my clients are focused on things other than me as they make their last grab for summer fun. As a result I had no appointments this afternoon.
So taking a queue from my client's, I decided to pick-up where I left off early this morning (did I mention REAL early this morning)and Zen-out in the backyard to finish what I had begun the previous night and put down early this morning(so early the birds were singing by the time I headed to bed).
The sun has now disappeared for the day and the rain has started as I finish this great addition to the written word - in English - on our beloved Kendo.
This book is a treasure trove for those of us who believe we partake in something more than a sport. Geoff has done a great job pulling together a very comprehensive collection of insights, commentaries, techniques, and philosophy on Kendo!
I have had many revelations and Ah-hah moments. You will too!
Being a Type A personality, I have the Kindle Version(can't stand waiting for the postman). However, I am going to buy a number of hard copies so I can give them to those just starting their journey. This book provides a context to Kendo that is not readily apparent or understood by those of us who have not had the advantage of being steeped in its cultural environment.
An excellent addition to every kendokas library!
