One thing we noticed was the increase in power. Even though this microwave is smaller, it is more powerful than the larger one we replaced (1,100 Watts as opposed to 1,000 Watts). This was a pleasant surprise. This new Kenmore functions very well. The rotating turntable inside the microwave ensures a more even distribution of heat that has less cool spots than we noticed with our older microwave. The operating volume is a little loud, but nothing out of the ordinary for a microwave of this size. It has a small spike in volume as the unit initially starts and the magnetron energizes. Once the magnetron is fully energized, the volume levels out. This only takes a few seconds.
The touchpad (front panel) has a unique feature. When you press numbers 1 through 6, the microwave automatically turns on for the amount of minutes that match the number. Pressing 1 starts it for 1 minute. An additional 30 seconds can be added with each press of the Start button. This feature can be overridden by first pressing the Cook Time button and then pressing the time you want. For example, to heat up a breakfast sandwich, press Cook Time and then 5 and 2 and then press Start. This enters 52 seconds and starts the microwave oven. Pressing the Start button again while cooking adds an additional 30 seconds. If you want to cook for only 1 minute, just press 1 and you're done. The microwave starts and cooks for 1 minute.
This is a nice feature not found in other microwaves that I've seen, but I do find it takes a little getting used to. I can also see it as being potentially annoying to others who commonly use cook times that aren't at exact durations, such as full minutes or at 30-second intervals.
We like the attractive look of this microwave. The white is a clean, bright white on both the interior and exterior of the oven. The buttons are nicely laid out and easy to clean. The panel is flat plastic, making cleanup a snap! The interior has a light that turns on when the door is opened (a requirement for me, since it's frequently dark when I wake up in the winter). The light also stays illuminated while cooking.
One feature I don't like, but it's a minor annoyance, is the beep that emanates from the microwave when cooking is done. When cooking is complete, the microwave gives off five distinct beeps that are easily heard in the bedrooms down the hall. Our old microwave would stop beeping when the door was opened. With this microwave, the only way to stop it from beeping is to press the Stop button. I'm a tall guy who has to stoop down to see exactly where the Stop button is, so this isn't a friendly feature to override. I'm just learning to ignore it.
As expected, this microwave supports a variety of defrosting and reheating features that are clearly communicated in the user's manual. The manual is well written and describes all the primary functions, which helps during the learning process after the microwave is first set up.
This microwave has a sensor reheat feature that senses the humidity of what is being reheated and adjusts the operating power based on what it senses. For this feature to function properly, food cannot be covered. The sensor needs humidity to exhale from the food to sense what power level to set. This doesn't work well for foods that will spatter, such as chicken. We find reheating chicken, for example, causes pops and small explosions when the bone is heated up. Not covering this kind of food leaves a mess on the interior of the microwave. The sensor reheat function works well with food that doesn't spatter and can be left uncovered when reheating.
We like this microwave. I'm happy with its size. It accepts a common dinner plate well or a small casserole dish. If you want to cook larger items, I wouldn't recommend it. Look for a microwave better suited for cooking larger entrées. If you're looking for a decent, moderately-sized microwave for general reheats or to cook modest-sized meals, then this is a fine option. We recommend it.
Con's: A little louder than our last microwave but tolerable. Wish it had a door handle on the outside but I've gotten used to it now.
I would recommend this microwave as it does work just fine and overall I am happy with it.
the one of the ones that would fit and the one with the best reviews. It does have rubber feet at bottom so it was a little closer than anticipated, but still fit. I use it for reheating mainly or cooking a frozen vegetables or heating up a frozen egg patty with sausage for breakfast. Runs quieter than old GE model once it's going. Happy with purchase so far. Seems to reheat well with no cold spots when you use the right time for the item you are reheating. My first kenmore product.
