Lawrence J. Haas, a former senior White House official and award-winning journalist, is the author of six books, including the new "The Kennedys in the World: How Jack, Bobby, and Ted Remade America’s Empire" (March, 2021). His most recent previous book, "Harry and Arthur: Truman, Vandenberg, and the Partnership That Created the Free World," was named one of the Wall Street Journal’s “Top Ten Nonfiction Books of 2016.”

A Senior Fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council, Haas writes a foreign affairs column for various outlets. Over the years, his pieces have appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, The National Interest, The American Interest, and scores of other outlets. He appears frequently on TV and radio, speaks to groups at home and abroad, and testifies before Congress. After a career in journalism, he served as Communications Director for the Office of Management and Budget under President Clinton, Communications Director for Vice President Gore, and Director of Public Affairs at Yale. He lives in Potomac, Maryland with his wife and daughter.

A History that clarifies the heights and limits of ambition

Like others of my generation, I recall with clarity the moments I learned about President Kennedy's assassination; Robert Kennedy's assassination and Ted Kennedy's Chappaquiddick accident. In 1963, there was disbelief; in June 1968 there was a reflection of what could possibly be next. And in 1969, there was a reflection that the last Kennedy brother will never be President. While these occurrences in 1963, 1968 and 1969 are all unforgettable tragedies, Larry Haas's "The Kennedy's in the World" reminds us of the decades of service and hope, while imperfect, that the three Kennedy brothers brought to the United States and to the world. As the author notes there are also certainly many "what ifs" regarding an unfulfilled history. This clearly written, carefully documented and well organized book adds a valuable understanding to the last half of the 20th century's domestic and international challenges. I found the author's transitions among the brothers roles in similar international events to be well done, logical and informative. I strongly recommend this valuable new book.

Even for those of us who experienced the Kennedy era as current events, Haas's book offers new insights. The focus and outsized impact of all three brothers on foreign affairs, unlike most elected officials, is in and itself unique. In his exhaustively researched work citing both their utterances and what was being written about them contemporaneously, Haas helps us understand the evolution of the brothers' thinking, especially Bobby's, who transformed from a 1950s cold warrior to a 1960's peacenik. If you are looking for a lurid account of the tragedies that befell the brothers or their well-publicized peccadilloes,, look elsewhere. In his last chapter ("What If") Haas does allow himself to speculate on what might have been had Jack and Bobby lived long enough to engage with some of the foreign policy challenges that post-dated their all-too-brief lives. That chapter alone might make for great fodder for a book club conversation.

I will always remember two defining moments of my life as a Baby Boomer- where i was on September 11,2001 when planes hit the Twin Towers and the Pentagon and where I was when JFK was assassinated. Haas’ book is a powerful, informative, balanced view of these 3 incredible men and their family. I have always been in awe of the Kennedy mystique/Camelot/ the tragedies. The perspective Haas provides on their involvement in Global issues and America’s appropriate place in it was incredibly informative, compelling and impossible to put down. As an American worker bee consumed with his own professional and personal life far apart from the “political scene” and World events, I want to thank Haas for humanizing it and reminding me of our wider and greater responsibilities, especially living in such an incredible country as ours and the blessings it has bestowed me.
