As a United Methodist District Superintendent, I serve 69 churches in the seven western most counties of North Carolina. I had previously served as a pastor for twenty eight years, most recently the Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte. I am the author of seven books, and have contributed to a number of publications, including Christian Century, the Upper Room, Pro Ecclesia and the Journal of Pastoral Care. I have also written for online periodicals such as Faith and Leadership and the Ooze.
I have preached in the Duke University Chapel, the Marsh Chapel of Boston University, the Upper Room Chapel, and in congregations ranging in size from very small mountain parishes to churches of over 5000 members. My sermons have appeared on Day 1 and in the Journal of Biblical Preaching, Lectionary Homiletics and Circuit Rider. I also contributed notes to the Wesley Study Bible, Feasting on the Word, and Daily Feast.
I enjoy living a cabin in the mountains of Western North Carolina with my wife Pam, who has an extensive background in missions leadership, especially in Haiti. We have been blessed with two young adult daughters. I enjoy listening to roots music, watching SEC football, ACC basketball, Braves baseball, eating mexican food, walking around Lake Junaluska and hiking on the nearby Appalachian Trail.
