Very slick device!
4 Stars
Very slick device!
OK, I just received the Slimblade. I have used Kensington ExpertMouse trackballs for about 16 years now, started using them because we needed a mouse that doesn't move when working on ships, but got so used to it and also started needing it for ergonomic considerations.I recently had to convert to Windoze 7 and opted to run the 64-bit version for more memory. Needless to say that the old Kensington ExpertMouse driver stopped working. I found out about Kensington's beta program for the new driver, called "Trackballworks" and decided to test the Slimblade with it, which I wanted for some time, but didn't buy earlier due to its limited programmability and many negative reviews on this issue. The Slimblade is the coolest looking trackball ever and is ergonomically far superior to the latest ExpterMouse, which is way too steep. Slimblade is even better (because flatter) than my old ExpertMouse, which I have to retire, because it is not supported (yet) by the new driver. The ball is slightly smaller than my old ExpertMouse ball, but identical in size to the latest ExpertMouse. Bright red to contrast the charcoal gray housing. That funny little flag sticking out the left side is actually rubber, you can cut it off with a knife. This is an optical mouse, the ball is textured under its smooth surface (looks like a car's "metallic" coating) and two optical units pick up the movement of the ball, which is seated on three tiny little ball bearings (individual metal balls in a seat). Looks like cleaning will not be an issue at all, the bearing balls are too small to pick up dirt and the optical sensors are recessed behind a large opening. The bottom under the ball is open, letting larger dirt fall out. Slick solution! What works out of the box on 64-bit Windoze 7 are the left and right mouse buttons as well as - to my surprise - the scroll function with the ball, which either scrolls up and down in all applications (not just browsers) or, if the vertical is all contained within the window, it scrolls horizontally (e.g. my Explorer windows, which I keep wide). What does not work are buttons 3 and 4 (no function at all, as far as I can tell) and neither does the snap-to-default-button function of the standard mouse control panel.Installing the Kensington beta 0.07 driver gives you more functionality, but, unfortunately, still not the same as the ExpertMouse. Having the trackball plugged in during driver installation immediately shows any added device and the driver allows you to select which settings you want to adjust with a click on one of four icons at the bottom (supported devices are only those that are currently sold: Slimblade, ExpertMouse and two others). Supported operating systems are Windows XP, Vista, 7 (32 and 64-bit) and Mac.With the driver installed, I can configure all four buttons independently. See custom images at the top. Unfortunately, the chording of buttons 1/2 and 3/4 is not available (options are grayed out) on the Slimblade, only on the ExpertMouse.Pointer speed and acceleration are standard fare (albeit without the slick visual curves) as we are used to it on older drivers. The scrolling on the Slimblade needs some getting used to it (I used to twist the ball on my old ExpertMouse as a nervous habit and now engage the scrolling without wanting to) but it is nice, because your fingers don't have to leave their positions - you use the ball to do it. Setting the scroll speed to its highest level enables you to scroll two web pages with little movement and without resetting your fingers.I agree with others who stated that the click is a little hollow and too loud for my taste. The case is made of plastic, feels a little thin, but certainly adds to the looks. Only time will tell how sturdy it is and if it is as flimsy as others describe it.One minor gripe is that the USB cord could be a little longer (it looks to be just under 5 ft), it barely reaches my computer, which is under the desk and to the left of my keyboard (Slimblade on the right). ExpertMouse cords are longer. All in all a very nice product, ergonomically the best I've seen and used and I believe I will keep it, I really like it. The new driver is very encouraging and perhaps Kensington will decide to give us button chording as well as support for older trackballs after release. The driver is fairly stable and has few minor issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars La perfección transformada en ratón
Reviewed in Spain on January 15, 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars FInalement le modèle deux fois moins cher est le meilleur !
Reviewed in France on July 11, 2019

5.0 out of 5 stars Twice as good as the Expert Mouse (imo)

This mouse, whilst older than the Expert Mouse by Kensington is easily twice as good, if not more.

My reason for that? The accuracy is spot on and you notice that straight away. It just feels nicer to use, from the materials to the clicks and scrolling. If you like me were looking for an introduction to trackball mice and were turned off by the price so went straight for the Expert, used it a few times and decided it wasn't for you? My suggestion is to "bite the bullet". Pay the extra amount instead of wasting money on the Expert.

You can thank me later!
