Cohen's boundless energies and ability to find truth in absurdity offer unique invitations to laughter--in subjects from mothers to sushi restaurants to reverse egg hunts (in which you hide from eggs who "have no/intention of finding you./They're not even looking"). The bittersweet humor of _Kentucky Derby_ surfaces in the minutiae of a luminous nail, and in life events such as moving to Norway: "where they're so beyond/slave labor, with laws that say//a clerk must work within five/meters of a window through//which she can see a tree/and by that tree be seen." Plain spoken and warm enough to entice those who fear poetry, her lean forms fatten with subtext dense as Dickinson's. The magic of her derby is in the last line: "It can't last. It lasts."

An American published by Salmon of County Clare? Life is full of surprises*. Both tighter and looser (more focused, more relaxed) than her debut, stand-outs here include Self Portrait with Chain Saw, Self Portrait with the Cinnabons and Sometimes I Drink Alone, this last previously unpublished. Lovely cover too. 4.5

* OK, Salmon's heroic housemother is Arkansan; so now I know
