Kershaw Blades and Knives
Commitment to Innovation
Kershaw was founded in 1974 to design and manufacture tools that knife users would be proud to own, carry, and use. This has meant that every Kershaw knife must be of the highest quality. Whether it’s a hardworking pocketknife, a hunting knife, or a special collectors’ edition, Kershaw always chooses appropriate, high-quality materials and is dedicated to intensive craftsmanship. Along with extremely tight tolerances and state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, this ensures that Kershaw knives provide a lifetime of performance.
Brawler Key Features
SpeedSafe Assisted Opening
Assists you to open any SpeedSafe knife quickly and easily with a manual push on the thumbstud or pull back on the flipper; built into many Kershaw best sellers.
May be used on either manual or assisted opening knives. The 'flipper' is a protrusion on the back of the blade that the user can pull back on, or flip, in order to move the blade easily out of the handle.
4-Position Pocket Clip
The user may position the pocketclip for tip-up or tip-down, left- or right-handed carry.
Locks the blade open during use; one side of the knife’s steel 'liner,' the steel plate to which the handle scales are attached, moves into position behind the blade to securely lock it open.
Mix it up with the Brawler
Modified Tanto Blade
The Brawler starts with a modified tanto blade—a shape often found in tactical and rescue knives that may be required to punch through tough materials. The tanto is an ideal shape for these piercing tasks because there is plenty of metal to support the point, making it stronger than many other blade shapes. You’ll notice that the top of the Brawler’s blade has a grind, too. This is called a swedge; it helps narrow the blade, adding to its piercing power.
Excellent Cutting Capacity
The Brawler’s straight belly offers excellent cutting capacity, is perfect for bearing down on a task, and is easy to re-sharpen. All this makes the Brawler an excellent utility knife. The Brawler’s handle is just as functional. The angled handle curves into the palm of the user’s hand. Jimping on the back of the blade offers additional traction. With the blade deployed, the flipper doubles as a finger guard and provides additional hand protection during knife use.
Fast and Easy One-Handed Opening
For fast and easy one-handed opening, the Brawler is equipped with SpeedSafe. Just pull back on the flipper and the SpeedSafe assisted opening system takes over, moving the blade out of the handle, ready for use. Sturdy glass-filled nylon handle scales, a secure locking liner, and our four-position pocketclip complete the package.

Kershaw is made by the same company that makes the famous (western world famous) Shun knives. They have a reputation for being a quality knife and I have had the pleasure of owning several over the years. This knife is no exception to the standard quality that kershaw makes for a daily carry knife.
I would not class this knife as excellent quality, but it is without doubt a sturdy and well built piece that will provide years of use without issue. The blade is good and will serve all my purposes and is very sharp as new. I have not had the chance to use it enough to dull it up, and also have not had to sharpen it.
The blade lock is linear and works as expected. The grip is good, but I personally prefer a different grip for a pocket knife. I feel like the grip is smaller than my hand and I wear a large sized glove.
The singe finger blade deploy is great and works very well, getting easier with use (not easier because the blade is getting loose). It can be operated with the index finger or the thumb, depending on how you feel comfortable.
The handles are rugged and feel like very hard plastic, but not cheap in any way. I have rubbed, scratched, and scraped on them with no marks afterwards.
The pocket clip is small, very small, making it all but worthless for me. I will most likely opt to remove the clip completely, although you could also change it to either side for left and right handed people alike.
The second time I sent it back I requested they replace the knife with one of comparable value without the same mechanism for opening. They fixed it for free both times (Kershaw did not pay for shipping to their facility) but didn't respond to my request. If you do use it as an edc knife, be prepared to have it break every 4 - 6 months. I recommended the knife to a couple of friends and they had the same issue. They both tossed the knives because it wasn't worth shipping them back to Kershaw.
The knife becomes mediocre to poor if the assisted opening doesn't work. You will start to feel the spring getting sloppy and sure enough, it'll break shortly thereafter.
Otherwise the knife is good looking, cheap enough to not be bummed if you lose it, easy to sharpen, and a good fit for my hand (not large hands).
The handle does feel solid and dependable, and won't slip, but this isn't a knife for stabbing; it's a knife for cutting line and opening boxes, and it just doesn't do that conveniently. Also while it's not a major issue, this product did not come as well sharpened out of the box as other Kershaw products.
I think most customers looking for a general purpose carry knife will be better served with another of Kershaw's products, in particular the Leek. That one is thin, conveniently shaped for common slicing tasks, and slides easily into a pocket.
