High-Performance SteelA budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics. |
Attractive Blade CoatingTitanium Carbo-Nitride blade coating produces an attractive, sleek black or gray blade coating that increases the blades hardness and helps to maintain a razor-sharp edge. Increasing the overall lifetime of the blade, Titanium Carbo-Nitride’s thin film coating achieves enhanced abrasive wear resistance and erosion resistance. The vacuum process is non-toxic and environmentally safe. |
Fast DeploymentUsing 'caged' ball bearings for smooth blade deployment and overcoming stronger knife detent, the KVT Ball-Bearing Opening System makes one-handed knife opening fast and easy without the need of a mechanical assist. Ball-bearings surround and freely rotate around the pivot. When the user pulls back on the flipper, the blade rotates out of the handle as the ball bearings roll into place. |
Secure Locking SystemA slimmer and lighter blade locking system, Inset Liner Lock utilizes a sturdy steel plate on the inside of the knife’s handle scales. Riveted into place in a custom-machined cutout on the handle’s interior, the plate provides the strength and security of a locking liner without the weight. Inset Liner Lock reliably prevents blade closure while ensuring conveniently quick, safe blade deployment. |

Manual FlipperFlippers on manual-open knives require user to push with quick strength until blade deploys. Some manual flippers disappear when blade deploys, others become a finger guard. Manual flippers appeal to inexperienced users as well as experienced users who prefer a classic, old-style opening. In both cases, ambidextrous flipper works as index finger applies pressure while closed knife sits in palm. |
Durable HandleStainless steel contains chromium to equip knife handles to withstand rusting and provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel offers durability and is often used in combination with another material to make for an easier grip. Offering excellent durability, stainless steel knife handles often incorporate etching, patterns, ridges or lines for a less slippery grip. |
Convenient PocketclipKershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. A pocketclip with tip-up carry is positioned so the closed knife carries in the pocket with the tip of its blade pointed upwards. A reversible tip-up or tip-down pocketclip allows user to change tip position. |

Build Quality - Buck: Both look very good to me. The experts say the buck has better materials, including a higher quality steel. Who am I to say different? They are extremely close in every visible aspect.
Sharpness - Kershaw: Both came sharp. Both are acceptable but the Kershaw is noticeably sharper.
Price - Kershaw: $22 vs $30
Size - Kershaw: This one is subjective. You may appreciate the beefier Buck. I wanted an EDC and the Kershaw is slightly shorter and slight narrower. The clip is also shorter and positioned on the same end as the carabiner. It just fits my pocket better and is the one I am carrying today. The Buck is going to my son...who is also very happy. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either one.
Edit:. Unlike the Buck, I can open the Kershaw with one hand. But while testing, I noticed the blade lock does not work sufficiently (and it works great on the Buck). Disappointing. Removed a star.
Edit two: After much use, the knife loosened up and the lock started to work properly. Happy with this knife....but should have worked correctly out of the box imo.

Opening and closing the knife one-handed is a bit fiddly and takes some getting used to. Without any proper thumb studs, one has to kind of press into the groove in the blade and lift it open slowly. The detent feels a little strong to flick it open, and the handle is cramped enough that I feel like I would have cut the inside of my palm with the tip of the blade if I tried. Closing the knife one-handed is also somewhat difficult. The frame-lock is very narrow and you really have to push down all the way in just the right spot to close it. All of this is effectively right-hand only. If you are a lefty, this is probably not for you.
The handle is just long enough that all my fingers can grip the handle without my pinky falling off the back, but with no finger guard or choil of any kind, it feels like there is very little stopping one's fingers from sliding up onto the blade if your hand slips.
The clip seems like a nice feature, but in practice it was not that useful to me. The knife feels just a bit on the big side to have on a keychain, but may be useful for hanging off of a tool belt or a backpack or the like when hiking. Also, the wire of the catch protrudes outwards and creates a slight hot spot against my palm when holding it. It also gets in the way of the pocket clip somewhat.
I'm a big fan of most Kershaws, but this one wasn't a winner for me. For something lightweight but large enough to be useful, I would recommend a flipper like the Fraxion or Skyline.
