I recently purchased a Kestrel 2500. I also own a Brunton ADC Summit, but have never been happy with the long response time required for an accurate temperature reading. An avid snowboarder and skier, I am prone to frostbite and got it twice more this season. I decided to get the Kestrel meter to get accurate windchill readings so as to avoid the frostbite. The ADC is a good meter and actually has more features (altiude ski run logs in particular). However, when that meter is introduced to an environment that has a very different temperature (for example...taking it out of your jacket to get a temp reading on a ski slope) it takes entirely too long for the displayed temp reading to drop to the accurate reading. The Kestrel, on the other hand, is very quick. I had an opportunity to test it on the slopes of Breckenridge and Schweitzer, Idaho recently and was extremely pleased with it's performance. The settings and controls for the 2500 are very intuitive and you really don't need the manual. The same cannot be said for the Brunton. To get the most out of that meter, you must spend a great deal of time with the instruction manual. The customer service techs at Kestrel (N-K) are very helpful as well.

Used extensively for hiking. Measurements were accurate and useful. Altitude matched published data on Kilimanjaro - very pleased with that! The case serves its protective purpose but is mildly irritating when you have to open it. Not enough to change my rating though.

I have been using my Kestrel in the fieldfor a few weeks now and I like it better than the Sherpa model that I had (that was stolen from me) purchased at Cabelas for half the price of the Kestrel.

The readout is easier to see than the Sherpa (especially since I am officially old now and have to wear Bifocals).

Apparently its supposed to be easy to calibrate the barometric pressure reading and altitude reading but why can't someone just make something that is ready to go out of the box!?!

Its a bit pricey in my budget, but I am sure it will provide me a lot of service hours in the field while I am researching snakes and other reptiles.

If I had to do it over it again, I would buy the Kestrel again (even with the calibration issue).

When I recieced my 2500 last wk. we were disappointed to find that we needed to input local pressure/elevation to cal the meter.I got a lot of response with a ? onthis site.Today a Rep from Kestrel called and explained .I was thinking we,d have to recal. this everywhere we went, which would defeat the purpose. But he said thats only if you've travelled a great distance.I live on the Coastal/plain of N.C. and the Rep. said if went to The Blue Ridge Mountains of N.C. (250 miles min. by highway)that it 'd be ok w/o recalibrating.I've experimented with the other settings etc..left it in water ,floating, took from 80 plus F. to freezer and visa versa w no problem, accidently dropped it and checked against local elevation...this is a COOL TOOL.

This is a weather enthusiasts dream. I've watched it for some time and barometer is always very close to
The weather app on my phone. The wind and temperature are also spot on. Great addition for a long range shooting
Bag. Does what it says it will do. Happy with the purchase.

I bought this as a "fun" thing to have while hiking. It has proven to be that, and more. The barometric pressure function is essential for predicting changes in the weather, and knowing the wind-chill factor brings to an end any discussion of how cold it feels.

I'm a shooter so I bought this mostly for that purpose, long range matches. I also live near a Dupont plant which has released chlorine gas from time to time so I also use it for running a computer model predicting spread of gas or particulates and wanted a better method of measurement than my estimates. This is an excellent instrument in quality and functionality. There are more expensive models but this one covers all the basic needs. I'm working out the best way to set the altimeter/barometer baseline and although it's easily done I just haven't had the time to sit and play with it yet. Very sensitive to wind speed, comes with a lanyard and plastic slipcover to protect it in your pack or pocket. Quick to use - well worth the money if you need good accuracy on weather related measurements. Have not tried their customer service. Hope I don't need to but will update if I do.

All expectations met. I calibrated it to a local weather station and it has worked perfectly. I use it to determine environmental factors at long range shooting sites and input the data in the "SHOOTER" program.
