The Kestrel 5700 Elite Weather Meter with Applied Ballistics
The 5700 Elite combines accurate environmentals and proven ballistics for first-hit firing solutions
The Kestrel 5700 Elite contains three decades of weather and ballistics knowledge, condensed into a single, rugged, pocket sized tool for military, law enforcement, hunting, and competitive long-range shooting. The Kestrel 5700 Elite employs the Applied Ballistics bullet library of custom drag models, an exact measurement of your bullet’s drag profile plus corrections for Aerodynamic Jump, Spin Drift, Coriolis, and Drop Scale Factoring to achieve accurate extended long-range shots. On top of employing a G1/G7 ballistic solver, this meter offers other features including a customizable Target Card, an expanded Ballistics Data Table, and storage for up to 30 gun/bullet profiles and 10 saved targets.
This meter offers a large, high-resolution and contrast display with ease of font readability. It also includes a built-in dual color backlight (white or red), extra-strong polycarbonate lens, AA battery operation and optional LiNK iOS and Android wireless connectivity and app support.
Easy to use
The 5700 Elite works with any gun or scope offering solution units in Mils, MOA, Clicks, Inches or Centimeters. The Environmental Capture measures and adjusts for real-time conditions and automatically updates the ballistic solution - eliminating the need to re-zero when moving to a different altitude. The Muzzle Velocity Calibration Guide allows for accurate bullet speed without a chronograph.

First, it's one less thing to rely on, and one less device to switch between, setup, and worry about while shooting. Also the kestrel will function in temperature and weather extremes that phones simply will not. I've seen shooters at competitions in cold weather, super hot weather, rainy weather etc. have their phones fail when the kestrel unit itself will still run fine. That's not to say having the phone interface is not nice at times, there's a larger screen, GPS capability etc. so there are times it's nice to still use the unit with the phone, but it's nice to be able to just use the kestrel by itself as well.
Second is the extra features, you gain more gun profiles, the ability to save a larger series of targets, and some extra functionality/options the lower units will not provide.
It's fairly simple to setup, and there's a lot of great online references for how to get everything dialed in and once you do have everything setup it's very simple to put target settings in and get a shooting solution.
BUT..... I have not been able to connect my phone to the kestrel using the Ballistics Link App on my Android, Sent my first one in and just got a new one today and still having the same probelms. Unit works great on its own but I bought the LINK for a reasom
I had a hard time deciding whether or not to go with Bluetooth version. I decided on the non-Bluetooth version (kestrel calls it LinK). I don't regret it at all. If you would prefer to enter bullet / gun profiles via smartphone, get the link. It can be done pretty quickly without the phone app though. Also the Bluetooth makes it easier to update firmware and load custom drag curves from Bryan Litz. For me this didn't matter because I point my bullet meplats anyway and his numbers are irrelevant. I also find that lot to lot variation of bullets results in lot to lot variations in BC. The Bluetooth would be nice if you plan to stay prone for a while with the weathervane mount hooked up to the kestrel. If you are constantly moving in PRS style matches it would be silly to hold the kestrel In one hand and the iPhone in the other. You can get everything you need right on the kestrel display.
While I was waiting for the arrival of the 5700 Elite with link I went to their website and they have everything you need. Manuals, software, links and how to's. Very well done website. That makes life much easier. Having my .308 for so long I had no need for all these goodies. Since they weren't around to the extent and technical advancement per cost when I was setting up old school. Since I am retiring the .308 Rifle and have purchased a 6.5 Creedmoor Rifle I think this will help me dial in my skills with this system nicely and with less pain and suck. This is a well done masterpiece! Can't wait to put it through the paces.

Needs some additions/details on the ballistics part (ex. scope values)
On the other hand, although the delivery was accurate, an additional cost appeared later on.
The "FREE UK delivery" stated, finally has an additional £49 import tax that has to be paid to FedEx since the product is imported to EU.
I purchased a Kestrel Elite unit with Applied Ballistics and Bluetooth link to use during a Precision Rifle Level 2 training course at the top-knotch "Rob Furlong Marksmanship Academy", RFMA, in Hanna, Alberta. Each student shooter is required to bring a Kestrel for the course and the expert instructors there, Rob and Maury, are absolute masters of the Kestrel.
During the RFMA course, I was taught how to use a Magnetospeed chronograph and the Kestrel to calibrate the muzzle velocity of the ammunition I brought along (140 gr Hornady ELD-M in 6.5 Creedmoor) to shoot from my rifle (a stock Tikka T3X CTR). I entered the average muzzle velocity into the Kestrel, captured fresh environmental data and then fine-tuned my riflescope turret settings for elevation and windage within a few shots fired on the 1000 Meter target. After plugging the new 1000M turret setting elevation into the Kestrel, I had custom Applied Ballistics information and turret settings for all ranges from100M to 1000M and beyond. Other shooters in the course who brought along their .338 Magnums, used data from their Kestrels to hit targets out to 2,200 Meters.
After learning how to competently use my new Kestrel weather meter paired with the Kestrel smartphone app at Rob Furlong's course in Hanna, I have gained total confidence in my ability to accurately engage targets well beyond any range I had previously envisioned.
