So I received the Keurig Kold in exchange for my unbiased review. Here it goes:

POP QUIZ! Let's say you're having a get together and 10 people show up. Everyone is thirsty. What seems easier?
A. Saying, "Help yourself. There's cans of soda in the fridge."
B. Getting out 10 glasses, and waiting 90 seconds to fill each one, one by one until you fill 6 up of course and then you have to refill the reservoir and wait for the machine to chill a while. Oh you forgot to take the seal off the pod? That's $1.25 you've just thrown in the trash.

If you chose option A, but need more convincing, then keep reading. This is gonna be a long one. If you chose option B, then there's nothing I can say or do to stop you from loving this product.

Let me break this review down starting with price and moving forward.

$370 for a single serve soda maker. Ok. So it looks promising. It's futuristic. But the cost of a 12 pack of canned soda is about $5 at the super market. So for $370 you can get 74 12 packs of soda (that's 888 cans). Still love this product? What if I told you that 4 pods for the Keurig Kold is $5 and each pod only produces 8 ounces of soda. So instead of twelve 12oz cans of your favorite soda, you get 4 8oz glasses of it for the same price. Let's do the math here so $5 for 32 oz vs $5 for 144oz. If that alone doesn't convince you to never buy this product, I don't know what will.

So when you buy regular cans of soda you can feel good about recycling and keeping the Earth clean. When you buy Keurig Kold pods, you can fill guilty for poisoning the Earth. But if you just flat out hate the earth you can save money while hating it by buying a 32oz Big Gulp at 7 Eleven for $0.

To start off, the Keurig Kold does exactly what you'd expect a Keurig to do. Pod goes in, drink comes out. And it does that quite well!

When I first opened the box, I was surprised by the larger size. When I put our older Keurig (Hot) next to it, the size difference became a little bit clearer - I would say it has about the same width, but a little less than twice the depth. So for some countertops, you won't be able to put very much in front of the Kold even when you aren't using it. It does make sense to me that the Kold is bigger, in any case, because it takes a lot more work to chill something than it does to heat something. So be aware of the counter space for this beast.

Using the Kold is extremely simple, especially if you have used a Keurig coffee maker before. Just plug it in, wait 2 hours (so the chillers can "charge up" so to speak), put in a drink pod and hit go. One thing that caught us at least once is that there is a foil liner on the bottom of the pods that must be removed before making your drink, or you get no flavoring - only carbonation. It's not much of an extra step to get used to, though. Unlike the coffee makers, this can only make a certain number of cold drinks in a row before it needs to "recharge", and the only time the Kold makes a noticeable droning noise is when it is recharging. The instructions say you can fill the water reservoir with ice to pre-chill the water and put less strain on the Kold's chiller, so you can get through more drinks without being forced to wait, but we never had to deal with this issue. One other note: It has to remain plugged in at all times, unless you want to go through the 2-hour-wait part of the process again. There is no on/off switch.

I did not buy this through Amazon. I bought it directly through Keurig at an introductory price. Besides pricing around, here are some things that I have learned and experienced.

We were early adapters to Soda Stream, and prefer not to have a CO2 bottle to replace. Throw in the fact that I am always forgetting to put my bottles back in the fridge, and this looked like a good solution. No CO2 canister, no refrigeration.

As you likely know, the pods are pricy. They come four to a package, and there are very limited varieties currently available, especially in diet. Sadly, not only are the varieties limited, but the flavors leave a bit to be desired. Not only are they a bit to be desired, they don't always work right. On a machine priced like this, and pods that cost more than cans, you really expect a bit more than having to poke a hole in the bottom of the cup to get the last of the cola out.

It is that, as much as the price that led me to leave a less than stellar review. My husband immediately did a thumbs down ... and asked for the canned variety.

Each carbonated pod comes with the CO2 beads in the top, and the syrup in the bottom. You peel the freshness seal off of the bottom and insert the pod, just like a Kcup. Push the button, and instant soda. :) There are cautions everywhere not to try eating the microbeads because they will cause serious injury.

There are also noncarbonated pods.

It takes two hours to cool down the first time, and you hear the fan running. You then prime it (following the directions) and you are ready to go. You need to keep it plugged in unless you want to go through the two hour cool down again. It says it uses about the same amount of power as a mini refrigerator.
