Original review -
I found that this machine made a good cup of coffee and was easy to use with the capability to control the coffee strength. I found several good features, but several that I did not like and that these resulted in lowering my rating for the machine.
· Ability to control the strength of the coffee and to make cups of 4,6,8 or 10 ounces.
· The machine will also brew a 40-ounce pot of coffee, but you need a special carafe that is NOT supplied.
· According to the instruction the machine will also make hot chocolate, but I have not tried this feature.
· The machine comes with a charcoal filter to remove water impurities, thereby eliminating a source of variability and poor coffee.
· You need special K-cups that are made for especially this machine. According to Keurig there are other brands of coffee that make compatible cups, but not all cups will work, including those made for earlier model Keurig machines. (I understand that there are workarounds to defeat this feature of the machine, but I have not yet tried any. Also, see the comments section for a link to what is purported to be a refillable cup that will work with this model. However, I have not tried this refillable cup so I cannot vouch for its operation with this model Keurig.)
· While the machine makes 4,6,8 or 10 ounce cups of coffee, it is not setup for 12 ounces, which is what I usually brew.
· The machine does not come with the carafe that you need for a 40-Oz pot and other carafes will not work even if they physically fit into the machine because the carafe must engage a special interlock mechanism. While the manufacturer is well within its right to make such a design, I found it to be an obnoxious feature of the machine. Likewise, for the incompatibility of the k-cups made for earlier models.
· The k-cups are not refillable and I understand are not biodegradable, so being plastic will reside in your landfill for an unacceptably long time. (See the comments section for a third party refillable cup that is purported to work with this model.)
The fact that the manufacturer has chosen to prevent the use of older K-cups, refillable K-cups and other manufacturer’s carafes has led me to down-rate this machine to four-stars. Had it been otherwise I would have rated it higher.
Over the years we have owned several major brands of coffee makers and when one broke we would always get another. However, it was always a different type and brand – until I bought my very first Keurig coffee maker a few years ago.
My first Keurig was the K15, the single serving coffee maker than only made one cup at a time. I loved this one so much that a few months I bought another for my office, and then one more as a gift to give to a close friend.
The following year I bought the Keurig K55 in addition to my K15 and gave away our Hamilton Beach Brewstation. I didn’t like the stale, burnt and bitter tasting coffee that came from the Hamilton Beach coffee maker, whereas we loved every feature of the Keurig K55, and each cup of coffee was deliciously fresh and tasty.
Last year I decided to add to our Keurig Coffeemaker collection, and bought the K200 too. I bought the K200 model because I liked the various accessories and I could purchase each one separately. I no longer buy products that come with all the accessories included, because I don’t want the expense of paying for items that I will never use. Currently, it was the carafe that interested me and I liked the idea of having more coffee accessible without having to get up make another cup. Since we do a lot of entertaining, it made sense that after serving each person their coffee, to have a carafe on the table for anyone who wanted a second cup. Therefore, I could relax after dinner and enjoy my guests without constantly running into the kitchen to prepare more coffee.
However, even without the carafe accessory, this is an excellent coffee maker and we take full advantage of its different features. In addition, in all the years that we have bought different coffee makers, this is the only coffee maker that includes a Charcoal Water filter with a charcoal filter. This insures the best and cleanest tasting water for our coffee.
The K200 model offers the choice for different hot beverages without the extra step to refill the tank each time with water, and this is due to the 40 oz. water reservoir. This enables us to make a variety of hot beverages in rapid succession, within a few seconds instead of waiting for all the water to reheat.
Furthermore, the Keurig K200 offers a personal ‘custom tailored’ brew by letting us determine the strength of our coffee, which is a choice of four. The smallest amount for a 4 oz. provides the strongest brew and the other three servings are a 6, 8 and 10 oz. In addition, there is the extra feature that offers the option for either regular or ‘strong’, which provides an even stronger brew. Personally, I love this extra feature because previously I used only 6 oz. of water for a filled pod as I prefer a stronger coffee taste. Therefore, the ‘stronger’ brew option increases the potency by about 25%, which is the perfect strength for me. Consequently, I can make an 8 oz. cup using the same amount of coffee, instead of settling for a smaller 6 oz. cup of coffee.
And then there is the extra feature to fill a 32 oz. carafe (enough to fill (4) 8 oz. cups), which was my original purpose in choosing a Keurig coffee maker from the 2.0 brewing system. Therefore, the K200 offers a total of 9 different brewing options - 4 different amounts for either regular coffee or a stronger brew for each. In addition, there is the option for making a whole carafe which offers the convenience for serving up to four cups to carry to the dinner table.
The Keurig K200 has a fast set-up, with easy to follow and systematic directions from the manual. It offers us a variety ways to make coffee, or just to heat water and all without any major modifications, because it just goes from one task to another.
Below are some of the general features, and all are well designed and ‘user friendly’.
The K200 has a black and white touch display, which serves different purposes.
A. Simple Directions
1. (add) More Water ‘Please’
2. Lift handle to begin
B. Coffee amount selections
1. (4 oz., 6 oz., 8 oz. 10 oz. and/or the carafe amount)
2. On the left of the screen is the touch pad to designate ‘a stronger brew’
3. A power press button will flash after I have made all my selections and the coffee maker is ready for the brew.
C. Brewing Information:
The other function of the touch screen display relates simple information regarding the coffee makers procedures. It informs me when it’s preheating the water and for my own safety it advises with a ‘please wait’ that I should NOT lift the handle during its brewing cycle.
Included with the Keurig K200 is a Charcoal Water filter Cartridge Kit with a charcoal filter. This will eliminate the unwanted chemical taste that is in some water systems, and good tasting water is essential for a delicious cup of coffee. The recommended life span for each charcoal filter is approximately 2 months or 60 ‘full-tank’ refills. There are several selections for Replacement Charcoal Filter-Pods available on Amazon.com.
The 40 oz. water reservoir wraps along the back side and is accessible from both the right and left, which accommodates both a right and left handed person. The cover has a top handle and lifts straight up, and then pour the water in from a bottle or container.
I love that the ‘maximum’ and ‘minimum’ fill lines on the water reservoir are facing front which makes it easy for me to see amount of water at a quick glance.
This is much more than ‘just a drip tray’, under the cover is a 1 1/4” deep receptacle that will accommodate 8 oz. of a liquid spillover. Therefore, if the user makes an error and pushes the wrong brew amount for a smaller cup, this will save the kitchen counters and the floor from a major flood.
In addition, this coffee maker will accommodate my 7 ¼” coffee thermos by sliding out the drip tray from bottom base. I can fill my thermos when placed directly on the kitchen counter and below the Keurig dispenser spout.
The separate purchase of the carafe accessory fits down at the base where the drip tray pulls out from the coffee maker. It slides easily into the open notch which connects it directly to the K200.
THE KEURIG K200 ACCOMMODATES REUSABLE COFFEE FILTERS:
We prefer using our own ground coffee rather than the packaged K-cup pods. Therefore it’s important to me that a coffee maker will accommodate a reusable filter, and we have several different brands that we used in our Keurig 1.0 Brewers (the K15 and K55). These all fit the K200 model which is a Keurig 2.0 brewer. Consequently, there was no added expense, and I am able to use the exact filters on both the 1.0 and 2.0 different brewers.
The only additional reusable filter needed was the extra-large one needed for the carafe and the one that I chose and fits and works perfectly in our K200 is the item and the link below.

COMPATIBLE K-CUP PODS:
Although we use our own ground coffee, I do have some flavored K-Cup coffee pods on hand for guests. Currently we have the ones from the Two Rivers Flavored Sampler Pack Single-Cup Coffee for Keurig K-Cup Brewers, which work in all our Keurig 1.0 brewers (the K15 and the K55) and equally well in our 2.0 brewer – the K200.
In conclusion, I love my Keurig K00 coffee brewer. It is a well thought-out designed coffee maker, with user-friendly features. This machine comes with a ‘Charcoal Water Filter Cartridge Kit and a charcoal pod filter, which guarantees excellent coffee, even though we have ‘hard water’ (which tastes awful) in our water system. I like the choice to buy the accessories separately, rather than an inclusive package for items that I may not need or want, which lets me control the expense rather than a ‘forced’ accessory purchase packaged deal.
