8 Keys to Parenting Children with ADHD (8 Keys to Mental Health) Paperback – October 5, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Parenting children with ADHD, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed, can be challenging and complex. But just as a child who struggles with reading can learn to decode words, children with ADHD can learn patience, communication, and solution-seeking skills to become more confident, independent, and capable. This book, rich with optimism, tips, tools, and action plans, offers science-based insights and systems for parents to help cultivate these skills.
Combining expert information with practical, sensitive advice, the eight "key" concepts here will help parents reduce chaos, improve cooperation, and nurture the advantages―like creativity and drive―that often accompany all of that energy.
Based on author Cindy Goldrich's seven-session workshop entitled Calm and Connected: Parenting Kids with ADHD©, this book focuses on developing and strengthening effective interpersonal skills in both parents and children as a way to improve conflict resolution.
Following the parenting principle to "Parent the child you have," Goldrich offers advice to help readers tailor their parenting to meet the needs of their unique child. The book also leads parents to recognize the value of being a leader and a guide to children, building parents' confidence in their decision-making, and giving children a sense of safety, security, and confidence.
The principles outlined in 8 Keys to Parenting Children with ADHD are appropriate for parenting kids of all ages―until they have "launched" and are on their own.

"If your child has ADHD, 'normal' parenting strategies just won't work. Cindy Goldrich, with wisdom based in both experience and research, lays out the system she's created for parenting when ADHD makes it hard. She helps parents understand their ADHD children (there's more to ADHD than you think!) and how to teach them the skills they'll need to be successful in life. This book will be a revelation that you'll want to read and share again and again."
--Sarah D. Wright, author of ADHD Coaching Matters: The Definitive Guide
"This book is a wise companion and personal coach for parents of children with ADHD. It's educational, confidence-boosting, and filled with helpful guidance on how to give kids what they need most--acceptance, encouragement, and positive attention. Goldrich walks parents gently through the challenges and opportunities of parenting 'the child you have' and packs her book with an abundance of specialized resources. This is a must-read for parents who want the best for their child!"

From the Author
In working with parents, my philosophy is, "Parent the child you have". Not the one you thought you would have or that others tell you that you would have if you just parented THEIR way. I help parents and professionals nurture children thought tolerance, empathy, and support, with a healthy balance of guidance, structure and discipline. As I say to parents: "Don't bend the Universe - too much." Prepare them for the real world, but know when to give them that extra chance they may need.

About the author

Cindy Goldrich, Ed.M., ADHD-CCSP, is a mental health counselor, certified ADHD Clinical Service Provider, and teacher trainer. As an ADHD Specialist, she supports parents, educators, and other professionals to address the impact of ADHD & Executive Functioning on learning, motivation, and behavior.
Her work as both a parent coach and a teacher trainer has given Cindy a unique viewpoint regarding how each group’s needs and perspectives impact the others. She has provided professional development and parent coaching to thousands of people across the country. I have worked with teachers, guidance counselors, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, social workers, school psychologists, paraprofessionals, and principals—educating them about the impact ADHD and executive function challenges have on students’ ability to access and utilize knowledge. As a parent coach, I’ve benefited from a behind-the-scenes view of the struggles parents and students often face as they work to manage school expectations. Incorporating the teachers’ perspective and constraints has allowed me to guide parents by providing realistic, useful feedback—as well as consulting—to effectively integrate teachers’ concerns and agendas. Working with both professionals and parents has allowed me to create a circle of support for all involved.
