Pros: Lets start with the most commonly used action while presenting, advancing through your presentation. The PR-Pro3 has two ways to advance and go backward. First there is a rocker wheel on the side and then there is a pair of buttons on the top with forward/back arrows printed on them. Both are easily manipulated with your thumb with minimal time getting comfortable with them. Next, there is a group of four buttons at the bottom of the top of the remote. Two will turn the volume of the PC up and down if you have video in your program. An F5 button will start your presentation from the editing view (This is the default that your PowerPoint opens up with). The last of these four buttons toggles between a live and black screen in case you want to turn off the presentation for a time. A red laser pointer is included for highlighting areas of interest. Then, looking at the top of the remote is a mini-joystick and two buttons that turn your remote into a mouse. With a little practice you can use the PR-Pro3 as a mouse from anywhere in the room. With a 100 foot range you aren't restricted in your movement. And that is vital to any public speaker. We need to move around and use the available space to keep our audience engaged.
Cons: It is hard for me to find anything to complain about with this device. The only thing that has ever tripped me up is that I forget to turn the remote on using the power switch on the side. But I also like the power switch where it is because I can turn the device off and not run down the batteries.
I have used this remote for years and have purchased them for several other groups after they saw me using mine. I have never come across anybody who used this remote and didn't love it. As I said in the title of this review, it has everything that you need for presenting with PowerPoint in the palm of your hand.
If you use Apple Keynote, I'm not sure how this remote will work with that product. Maybe another reviewer will have some experience for that group.
To begin with, the range, ease-of-installation, and reliability of this product make it a truly professional-grade presentation remote. It is active in well under five seconds after insertion into my Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and Dell desktop, and no user intervention is required for setup. At the rated 100 foot range, reliability is fantastic, even through interior walls and furniture, I was unable to make it miss a single keystroke at this range. This level of performance and ease of setup is far better than the many consumer-level Targus and Logitech products my colleagues use, and better than the older SMK-Link product as well. While I did not experiment with greater ranges, I would assume that with this performance longer ranges would be possible in a line-of-sight environment.
The additional controls, which were why I selected this model, also worked very well. The scroll knob, located on the right side of the remote, works well in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Foxit PDF Reader, and Mozilla Firefox, and is easy to manage, with clear stops for raising, lowering, and centered positions. The volume control, on the front of the unit, works equally well, adjusting the Windows volume in Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2012. The mouse pointer, which is highly reminiscent to the "TrackPoint" style mouse on Lenovo, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard laptops, also works very well, and to users of trackpoint-equipped laptops will be second-nature. To non-trackpoint users, a few minutes of practice is necessary to learn how to manipulate the controller. The slide advance, screen blackout, and "F5" button (start PowerPoint presentation) all worked as expected as well, without any special setup. I did not try any of these functions on a mac, so I cannot comment on compatibility.
The laser pointer on this remote was the biggest disappointment, as it is a standard 1mW red unit. On a presentation remote of this caliber, either a 5mW laser or a green or blue laser would have been better, as all of these stand out far better. The laser point tends to get lost in bright rooms or on slides with very colorful backgrounds, and I would advise users to test it with the projector, background, and content to be used before depending on it. The USB receiver dongle also fits into the remote, which I at first thought was a gimmick, but turned out to be very handy in order to prevent loss. Finally, the batteries provided with the unit were very inexpensive foreign-market Carbon-Zinc units. I would strong advise users to replace these with alkaline batteries, and expected something better on a remote of this caliber.
Despite the shortcoming of the laser, overall this is the best presentation remote I have seen or owned, and would recommend it to anybody seeking a professional-grade unit.
