A candid, rollicking business memoir from the Home Depot cofounder, filled with personal stories, savvy business advice, and timeless lessons for a life well lived

"A classic Cinderella story of the American dream fulfilled, told with humor and honesty." — GARY SINISE

"An extraordinary story. ... [Tells] Marcus's version of the American dream, from tenement to boardroom, homespun into lessons for readers wanting to make it in business or philanthropy." — Financial Times

The start of Home Depot sounds like the beginning of a bad joke: Two Jews and an Italian decide to build a new kind of hardware store... In 1978, Bernie Marcus's livelihood depended on just such a scenario. Having been fired at the age of forty-nine, he teamed up with Arthur Blank and Ken Langone on a bold new endeavor. Their first day in business was so disastrous that the next morning, Marcus's wife wouldn't let him shave because she didn't want a razor in his hands. But the last laugh would be theirs, as the business partners grew Home Depot into the world's largest home improvement retailer, empowering millions of Americans to "do it yourself."

"Doing it yourself" has been the theme of Bernie Marcus's entire life. By the time he was fifteen, he had held more than a dozen jobs, joined a gang, and worked as a hypnotist in the Catskills. The son of a cabinetmaker and garment worker who survived the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, Bernie overcame a hardscrabble upbringing to author one of the best entrepreneurial stories in American history. Today, Home Depot employs 500,000 associates at 2,300 stores and is one of the most recognized and admired companies in the world.

The same energy that made Home Depot successful has helped Bernie give away more than $2 billion and pioneer a new model for philanthropy, transforming millions of lives. There is no single, winning formula for trying to make the world a better place, but Bernie shares what he's learned—that the skills needed to build a Fortune 500 company are the same ones that can help cure cancer, treat veterans with PTSD, and transform autism treatment. And it doesn't take a fortune to make a big difference in your community.

Kick Up Some Dust will inspire you to dream, build, and give—and, maybe, change the world.

I loved this book! His story has so many lessons that I sent it to my 26 year old son, hates to read, and he slugged his way through and learned a lot of life's lessons from Bernie! The man did what he loved, did really well and made so much money his next job was to give a ton of it away!

Great Book! Bernie's last gift to us. Too many in the field have lost sight of his dreams and advice. Hopefully, enough will read this book and be reminded why we wear the Orange Apron.

Bernie and Arthur wrote a book called “Built from Scratch” about the origin of Home Depot. After Nardelli took over running Home Depot, I used to say that another book should be written called “Nothing left to Scratch”. It would be a book about how a guy could take such an amazing company with such a strong culture for believing in and supporting their customers and employees and destroying it completely.
Thankfully that second book never had to be written.
This book brings back into focus what it took to start Home Depot. The importance of people and relationships with customers, employees and vendors. The absolute advantage of creating an entrepreneurial culture with trust, open communication, ideas and family values.
I worked for Home Depot for almost 20 years before I was fired at the tail end of the Nardelli regime. To me it felt like I was being cast out by my family. It really sucked.
The first job I took after leaving found me getting fired just under a year later with my boss telling me I was “too nice, and that knocking out a singles mom’s knees out from under her by selling her a car at way over sticker price was not a bad thing.”
The next job I landed was a temp job. It was supposed to be for only 3 months maximum. Well, that was 14 years ago. I now hold a senior level position at the company. I took what I had learned about Home Depot, the very things that Bernie talks about in this book, and applied them. I’m not perfect at what I do, but I try to be consistent and am passionate about the people I work with and our customers.
Reading Bernie’s book, “Kick Up Some Dust”, made me feel like I had my very own breakfast with Bernie, with him telling me what works, what doesn’t and what I can do different to make things better for those around me.
Thank you Bernie for the opportunity to have been part of your Home Depot family and now for sharing the stories in this book!!

I can't say enough good things about this book. Some might consider it a bit of a self-help book and it definitely has that to offer, without any plans or lists or exercises to do. Really, it's a short business (and some personal) autobiography. I bought it after listening to Bernie Marcus being interviewed. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I have a long list of people I want to share it with.

I have worked for this company almost from inception fortunately, many will just read and maybe not know all that Bernie is saying, hes a man that started a company in his older 40s..imagine that, yeah hes outspoken now and thats ok, but from an insider if people took care of their workers like he and Arthur did in the inception of the company we would have better workplaces across the country )

I read this book because I couldn’t understand why my sister, age 80, has worked for Home Depot for 20 years. She loves the atmosphere. She is responsible for “kids day” and loves every minute of it. Customers love her and often ask for her to help them. What a great guy Bernie is. He sure has left his mark.
