i got this book as a christmas gift. ive been hooked on Patrick F. McManus since. all of his books are funny, but this is one of the best. its the kind of book that anyone can enjoy both young and old (though there is some language that the parents of younger readers may not approve of)

We have two copies of the previous edition of this hilarious book in our elementary school library. This is the first title I recommend to students requesting a book on camping.
It is also a great read-aloud to upper elementary age students, and since each topic--such as ants, beef jerky, cooking fire, gorp, knives or wire coat hanger--is usually less than a page in length, it's an excellent, quick time-filler. I usually just have to read a couple of these sections, and the kids line up to put this McManus classic on hold.

This book completes my McManus collection, and it is the icing on the cake (well, maybe the whatchagot in the stew).

I definitely recommend this book but acknowledge that it is difficult to get a copy. With this in mind I don't care where you start, but if you haven't started you must read McManus. If you've never been kicked out of bed due to uncontrolled fits of giggling at 1:00 in the morning, you can find out what its like by gettin' on Amazon and orderin' any McManus book.

I've steered many down the McManus path. To date there has been 100% happiness and 0 complaints (not counting the questioning spouses who don't understand why 42 year old men all of a sudden start giggling at 1:00 in the morning...).

This book was purchased to help complete a collection of his works. I'm reading them in order of release, and didn't get to this one yet. However, this author has NEVER disappointed, so I'm confident that the trend will continue.

It wasn't quite what I was expecting since I have most of his other books--not side splitting, but I like his style and what he shares. The more I read the more I thought this is a book my grandson (5) will need in a few years for camping and understanding some of the outdoor life. The more I read, the more I appreciated the facts he presents for young campers. I really appreciated the facts about the bears, because I was familiar with the truth he presents.

Although this book was panned as "not for grown-ups", I'm pretty sure grown-ups love it too. It's for kids of all ages. Nonetheless, this brings back memories of planning for camping trips - many hours of anticipation and ill-advised planning; as well as, the actual camping with the accompanying "pleasant miseries" of the big events. It evokes the memories with Norman Black and the Wendover brothers - eating raw potatoes with three beans each, eagerly consuming a big pancake only cooked on one side & with mustard, our last remaining condiment, and of course the nights in the tent, being eaten by a thousand mosquitos which shared the living space with us!

Yes, this book evoked many great childhood memories. Kid Camping from Aaaaiii! to Zip
