Praise for Shasheen Shah and The Kid and the King
"When I met Shasheen several years ago, on the surface, it appeared as if I were as a high a performer as they come. I had great career success and trajectory. Plus, I was physically fit, constantly worked on self-development, ate only natural foods, had a beautiful family, went on fun vacations and adventures, and lived in a great place in California. But the real story is I was beyond rundown, brain fogged, and on the verge of the scene from Anchorman-picture Will Ferrell's character saying, 'I'm in a glass cage of emotion.'
"My work with Shasheen and the EMP Process has not only continued to grow all the areas of life people would consider 'success, ' but most important of all is that I have a dramatically improved life experience, more presence, better relationships, and hands down, I am happier every single day. I started living life more the way I truly wanted, with clearer priorities and not just to continue to do 'what you are supposed to' or makes other people happy. The return on the investment for the work we have done is invaluable.
"And the best part of what I learned is that nothing is broken, I do not need to be fixed, and I am simply human like everyone else. Once I grasped that, my ability to connect and coach others (at work and in personal relationships) has taken off, and I believe I am making a profound impact as a leader more than ever. By embracing that humanity, seeking to understand it, and finding out what triggers me and what drives my emotions, I am able to see the game more clearly. The triggers never stop, but the ability to navigate life, stress, and incredible challenges just becomes easier."
-Chris Sullivan, Senior Manager at Tesla
"Shasheen brings a heartfelt and refreshingly insightful look at the question of how and why we communicate and act the way we do with a field-tested set of exercises and questions that are bound to make a difference in how you look at yourself and your team."
-Claude Silver, Chief Heart Officer of VaynerMedia
"Shasheen's coaching gets straight to the point. His insights cut swiftly through your self-imposed, limiting beliefs. Opening yourself or your team to that perspective will begin your own transformation toward outcomes at rates and scopes you'd previously only dreamed about."
-Bernie Maloney, Systems Operation Manager, Hewlett Packard
"Having Shasheen in your corner sets you up for success and promotes thinking from different angles to see past the obvious. His fresh ideas, resourcefulness, and talent resulted in outstanding achievements on my part, and I couldn't recommend this gentleman more."
-Oliver Hartwig, Pura Vida Villas, Phuket, Thailand
"Shasheen has been an incredible, life-changing asset to me. . . . I'm a completely different thinker today. I have that peace I've been striving for, and I thank Shasheen for getting me there in short order."
-Sharon Contillo, WebSphere Specialist at IBM

About the author

Ultimately, I believe what we are all looking for is an optimal experience in life. As a trusted advisor to some of the most successful men and women around the world, I have the privilege of listening to the inner conversations that most people never get a chance to hear. What I have found is that no matter what it may look like from the outside there is no escaping the human duality that I have articulated in the Kid and the King. While external success may look good, winning the internal game will allow you to feel good.

Through Shah's guidance, I found myself reflecting on all the layers of what it means to be connected to our kid selves: both the beauty there, the dreaming and the openness to possibility, as well as what he explains in depth in the book -- how our wounded child self can be working against us in these invisible (but also so obvious) ways. The notion that we actually CAN reach our potential, that mysterious thing that gnaws at us even as we may be experiencing much success according to the ways we have been told are important and right, is one we tend to overlook. Because it's easier. The Kid and the King is for people who have reached that place where it's no longer enough and are ready to do the inner work to be the self that can sit with authority and wear the crown of integrity (wholeness, integration, reconciling the split between our conflicted selves). Very much recommend!!
The core teaching of this book lies in the Emotional Mastery Process (EMP). Shasheen gives us a set of five simple questions that we can apply to the scenarios in our everyday lives. The questions themselves and the example situations provide clarity on how to determine whether our emotional reactions are moving us closer to our desired outcomes. There is additional focus in the book on discovering and managing the emotional influences on our lives. I plan on going back and spending additional time on those more in-depth exercises because of the impact from the simple EMP practice.
Overall, this book is a great mix of useful information and actionable steps to improve the quality of the outcomes in life. I highly recommend you pick this up if you are looking for a new perspective on self development!
No matter where you are in life - feeling stuck or feeling on top of the world - I think this book will help you get to know yourself better, and use that knowledge (and practical tools) to improve how your experience life, how you make decisions, and how you build and shape relationships.
Shasheen’s approach may seem simple at first, but it is quite powerful. Everything is explained in accessible and practical (and heartfelt and personal!) ways, and wisdom is drawn from many sources. The short exercises guided me towards important insights. Valuable tools and strategies are explained throughout the book, so make sure you read the whole thing! I especially liked and benefited from the second half.
So yea... I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone looking to get honest. Transparent. And grow!
