The sandbox was easy to assemble. With the bolts going into the thin walls of the planks, I'm not sure how sturdy it will be in the long run. The liner lay out was great. The pre-punched holes made installing the liner a breeze.
10 x 50lb bags of sand were used to fill it up to the top of the liner. The weight of the sand keeps the box in place.
Overall, I'm happy with the easy of assembly and the simplicity of the design. Let's hope that it holds up.
UPDATE: One the sides boards already has a crack in it. I'll have to contact them about a replacement.
UPDATE #2: My daughters shoe got snagged on the tip of the crack and it left this giant shard. I've contacted the KidKraft. No reply yet. I'll update again when I get a response.
UPDATE #3: Same problem as another reviewer. Kidkraft won't process without a so called 'batch number' that they don't even put on the actual product. It's on the packaging that gets thrown right away. I'm going to see if Amazon can step in and make this right.
UPDATE #4: Cracked seat just like the other review. Amazon has offered a full refund. Unfortunately, that means taking it apart, boxing it up and finding a place for the sand. I'm going to build a replacement. Which was what I was hoping to save time doing by buying this product. This sandbox has been a complete waste of time and money.
Make sure you keep a record of the batch number. It should be on the box and instructions. One of our seats cracked within a month of putting the sandbox together and Kidkraft customer service gave us the runaround for a couple days before they'd send a replacement since we didn't have the batch number.
Good news: this sandbox is huge. We chose it because we knew it would be large enough for both kids and their toys.
1--The mesh cover is fairly useless. Water still gets in, cats/small animals can still get in, grass still gets in when you mow the lawn...my suggestion is to not even expect to use the cover. We created a quick rectangular cover with some 1x1.5 wood, a tarp, and a staple gun. Total cost about $15, looks good but not great. We would have used plywood but we wanted a cover the kids could remove without our help.
2--The wood needs to be treated before assembly. We moved to a new home and chose to reuse the sandbox, and the edge of the board closest to the ground showed some rot after less than a year at our former home. We stripped and restained the boards before assembling at our new home. Wish we had applied some sort of protection before our first install. The manual said the wood was already stained, but I don't think it's enough.
3--Cut a few small boards to stick under the 4 corner seats. The seats are strong enough to hold kids and adults up to about 100 pounds, but if you plan on sitting here while playing with the kids you'll feel a lack of sturdiness. Put a 2x4 or 1 x1.5 board upright under the corner pieces.
To answer a few other questions I've see on the post: we used about 10-12 bags of sand to fill the sandbox. The sandbox looks awesome, and seems more sturdy than others we've seen at friends' homes. Setup takes less than an hour.
Overall, we're happy with our purchase and love the sandbox, but we may have looked around a little more had we known about these challenges.
Only con is that @ 5 ft wide, you cannot get a piece of plywood to cover over it for the winter. I had to splice 2 pieces together to make a solid winter cover. Maybe a 6ft x 4ft option would have been better (but not square :s)
