Top Customer Reviews
Christmas music turned into Disturbed and Linkin Park as I struggled, slammed a beer, huffed, puffed, swore and nearly gave up a few times until the end was finally in sight.
I'm not a handy person, by any means. But I've assembled beds that took less time and frustration than this damn toy took.
The instructions are ridiculous. By the second level, as per the instructions, I had the entire [heavy] toy upside down on my lap as I attempted to fit a screw driver that was too small on the screwing end to screw in things I could have screwed in before the second level was screwed on. Does that sentence make any sense? It makes about as much sense as the instructions did. They're bloody awful.
I smartened up by the third level but the only thing I had to screw in there was the yellow and black thing you see in the picture.
By the end I was thinking hard before I screwed anything down. I did the second ramp before they told me to and I'm glad I did, I remember thinking that.
There's about fifty screws that go in to this thing and believe me when I tell you, you assemble everything from the elevator lift to the ramps. I'm surprised they didn't make me assemble the cars.
NOW. That being said, this is my son's favorite toy. I noticed a review after I'd purchased the garage detailing the cars flying off of the ramp. I haven't had an issue so far. My son went as far as to throw the "gas station" [which, isn't screwed down nor is it supposed to be.] and it stayed in tact.
We'll see how it fares up. I'll happily post updates if anything comes up so you can make an informed decision.. but so far, I'm entirely happy I got this for my son. A list of toys he got for Christmas include: Buzz, Woody, a Space Rocket, puzzles, magnets, a train table and set and a WoWWee Roboquad Robot! I am happy to report that my son, although happy with his other gifts, played with this garage set the most. I'm really happy with it, regardless of how long it took me to set up.
I would also like to note that through my entire screwing, huffing, puffing and growling process only one piece of wood cracked and that was because I had stripped the screw putting the end on the turny bit for the garage door, that you can lift up, and needed to rip it out manually. So that was MY fault.
I put as much of it as I could together using a small power drill I have... and although I was careful, I think I over tightened in a few places and the wood held up. So I'm content.
Lastly, this toy is damn cool and definitely deluxe. My son LOVES the ramp [for good reason, I purchased this toy as a near replica of one I used to play with as a child... it also had a swirly ramp and an elevator lift.] and at 2.5 years old he figured out how to use the elevator no problem, with no help. He finds it fairly easy and absolutely loves it.
I love it, he loves it... It took forever to get the stupid thing together... but it's his favorite toy and who can blame him?
Do not follow the instructions to a T. Think before you act. You'll regret it if you don't.
UPDATE 1/9/13: The day after Christmas, my husband went to Home Depot to buy the screws (about 50 of them). But they are such odd sizes, they couldn't be found. I called Amazon and they sent another garage set. The hardware was again missing! I then called Kidcraft and they promised to Fed Ex the hardware. It's been 6 days and nothing has arrived. Now we have to lug the first huge package to UPS to return to Amazon and spend more time calling Kidcraft for replacement hardware. An unbelievable hassle and no help from Amazon.
I was looking long and hard for a good garage for my two year old boys played with and it was surprisingly hard. There are lots of garages, but none that quite seem to be as fun and sturdy as the old school garages.
This one really fits the bill. It's very sturdy wooden garage. My boys sit and stand on it (despite being told not to) and it holds up fine.
There are a lot of details in it as well. From the garage, to the gas station, to the ramps and car wash. There are a lot of fun pictures and details that show a lot going on in this particular garage. So, it's lots of creative fun for my boys.
The elevator is always a big hit.
The ramp is always a big attraction and my boys love to send their matchbox cars, included wooden cars, and lot of other things down the ramp. The ramps have held up quite well for me despite some rough play, although I read other reviews where experiences differ.
It's not "hard" to assemble, but there is a lot of assembly. So, be prepared for that. I also had a problem where my first one didn't include the screws. The company offered to send screws for free, but I opted instead to return it and get a new one from Amazon in two days. The screws eventually arrived like 3 - 4 weeks later. I didn't care so much because I just exchanged it, but I read other reviews where the screws were left out.
Overall, this toy is an amazing hit with my boys. They play with it all the time for hours. Lots of different ways to play with it and lots of things to be creative with. The best garage I found by far. I was glad to find it!
